Ms. Sandys takes us on a personal tour through Churchill's route, talks with the relatives of those who helped Churchill escape, and gives us intimate insights into a man who seems to have, like Minerva, come into this world fully armed with wisdom and valor.
The World-War-II Churchill who most of us know is a mere coda to the sixty some-odd years that preceded it. Celia Sandys makes her grandfather come alive for us ... it is a remarkable book.

Very interesting insightful well written book which captures Churchill's personality while providing an exciting tail of his exploits during the Boer War. By retracing Churchill's foot steps and interviewing the descendants of the people that Churchill came in contact with for the oral history passed down to them, Celia Sandys learned many pieces of history never previously reported. She combined her research with a detail knowledge of the history of the times to provide an exceptionally interesting and vivid picture of her grandfather's remarkable exploits including his escape from the Boers and subsequent service as a soldier/reporter during the Boer War. She has included many facts not found elsewhere that help set Churchill's course for future greatness. Well worth the read.

Story behind how this was written is fascinating, a sort of modern-day "crowd sourcing". It is as much about Churchill in South Africa and all his escapades, as it was about how the local people remember him with pride -- through the family stories they were able to tell his granddaughter.

There are so many interesting details in Sandys' book. The writing sometimes feels a little confused, but there is an obvious love for the subject (her grandfather) and so many accounts from relatives of the many people that played a role in Churchill's time in the Boer War.

I expected more from Churchill’s grand daughter. She went around to people who remembered him and his escape. Very little scholarly effort. It is more like a magazine article expanded to a book. The Candace Millard book about the same escape is so much better.

This author realistically tells the story of her grandfather’s experiences in South Africa. It was, though, infuriating (for me) to read about the lies the British told themselves about the Anglo-Boer War during her recollections of Winston Churchill’s experiences in South Africa. It is a comforting thought to think that he came to believe it was indeed a ‘War of Greed’ after all. My great-grandmother was a survivor of the Bloemfontein Concentration Camp, in which thousands of women and children died. The war in South Africa (especially Kitchener’s Scorched Earth Campaign) is a huge black mark on British history! This book, however, does tell some of those stories, which must not be lost.

I'm pretty sure many will say, "What - not another Churchill history..." But this gives another independent view and not being obviously presented as a dry historical set-piece it reads very nicely and is a bit hard to put down. I recommend it as a pleasant piece to fill some of the gaps likely in the knowledge of those such as myself who are not professional Churchill scholars. Recomended.
