When an Amish farmer is found dead in his barn, his family accepts his death as God’s will. But Detective Jakob Fisher knows the farmer didn’t hit himself in the head with the shovel lying beside his body. And when it comes to light that a stranger appeared at the farmer’s home and now money is missing from their milk can, Fisher suspects robbery as the motive—especially when another Amish family is victimized.
Getting to the truth proves difficult, however, since Fisher has two strikes against him in the eyes of the Amish—his chosen career, and the Amish roots he left behind. Desperate to stop a murderous thief, Fisher turns to Heavenly Treasures shop owner Claire Weatherly for help. The trust she’s earned from the Amish community enables her to go where the detective cannot—straight into the path of a killer...

Laura Bradford writes with intelligence and believability. It is obvious she researches well the Amish culture. In this entry, I enjoyed learning how the Amish obtain the horses they use to pull their buggies. This was something I had not even thought about before. All of her characters are people I would love to know in real life. I found it exciting that Claire, against the wishes of Jakob, purposely put herself in danger to catch the killer.
I have read and enjoyed the prior four books in this series, but this was by far my favorite. Although, I think I say that with each new book. 😉
As an extra treat, we're teased at the end of this book with a sample of the first book in Ms. Bradford's new Emergency Dessert Squad cozy mystery series, Eclair and Present Danger, which will be released on June 7, 2016.
Enter Claire Weatherly, English shop owner, and her beau, Jakob Fisher, who left the Amish to become a cop and is now shunned. Claire and Jakob put their heads together to find out who did the nasty deed. The killer is still roaming the area and has now turned to stealing large amounts of money from the Amish homes. Will Claire and Jakob find the killer before he strikes again?? Will Jakob's relatives or Claire be the next victim?? And will the missing race horse be found?? Miss Bradford has woven several sub-stories in this book that all come together at the end. Terrific book!! :)
Although this is the 5th in her Amish Mystery Series, it is not necessary to read these books in order because Ms. Bradford gives enough background (without spending 30 pages doing so) so you can know what happened in the past.
I loved this story and highly recommend both this book, the whole series (I have thoroughly enjoyed them all) as well as her holiday short story: A Christmas Mourning: An Amish Mystery Short Story. That was another wonderful read – which I read on my Kindle.

This evenly paced drama has everything one desires when reading a mystery. A great storyline that kept me engaged in all aspects in the telling of this story. Multiple suspects with some twisty turns that kept me intrigued as to how this will all end. Lovable characters that make me feel like I’m part of all the action, like I’m the one sitting on the stool at Claire’s shop watching it all happen. This was a well-written story that was brilliantly executed and I look forward to my trips to Heavenly, Pennsylvania with Claire, Jakob, Diane, Esther and the gang.
