"Told with a female protagonist, Springer's shrewdupdate of the Cyrano de Bergerac story uses it as the perfect prism for middleschool girls, demonstrating how hitting puberty at different times can affectsocial status, love relationships, and friendship. For a light, rather humorousnovel, it's a surprisingly potent theme, and it also brings up an interestingpoint: how these bodily changes are hard on the girls who develop early as wellas on the ones who develop later...A surprisingly successful, suspenseful, and engrossing take on theCyrano story with a contemporary twist. --Kirkus

Cici, a seventh grader, is obsessed with yoga, interested in nail polish, and concerned with changing her beverage order at the coffee shop so that she appears more adult. Her main talent is giving sound advice to her peers. She can also be quite selfless, so when Cici's best friend Aggie announces her romantic interest in the object of Cici's own secret crush, she puts her own feelings aside to help Aggie try to win him over. Cici's name is an overwraught play on that of Cyrnao de Bergerac, whose story Cici's is designed to mirror.
Ultimately, Cici Reno is exactly what it presents itself to be: a light, middle-grade fiction read for anyone who wants to delve more deeply into the inner workings of junior high relationships, advanced yoga poses, or amateur advice-giving. The characters feel realistic, and they are quite empathetic, even when doing stupid things. This was never going to be a profoundly meaningful book, but every reader needs to have fun, right?
Cici Reno by Kristina Springer comes out this April. I give it a few months before Disney starts making a movie based upon this book.
