I liked how Ella gets kicked out and gets a chance at a new life. Her step family basically goes mental on her and there's some real fear that left me very eager for her to escape. You get a very good sense of the fear of not knowing if someone is about to end your life (despite, in this case, knowing that won't happen because Cinderella stories always have happy endings and you can't do that if she dies!)
I do kinda wish with the taylor the word fae wouldn't have been thrown around so much. She's the fairy godmother here and it wasn't flat out in your face obvious that she was doing magic by waving a wand, but dropping the term fae kept it from being the subtle is it or isn't it that I thought would have add some nice mystery to who the taylor was.
The only other thing I want to note is in regards to Ella being transgender and how cruel her stepmother was. I wasn't sure if transphobia was a thing in this world. There were a few characters who learn Ella was born a boy and they pretty much roll with it, the princess kisses her while at the ball and everyone sees her as a woman, and there are females who dress more masculine. Which is a nice theme of acceptance. The only people who seem to have a problem is Ella's step family, so I was left unsure as to if the universe I was reading had issues faced in the real world or if Ella's step family's hatred was more a plot device. It didn't really take away from the story for me, just left me with a little confusion to world building, I guess.
Overall, it's a fantastic twist on Cinderella. The cover is beautiful too and the writing flows nicely (there were a few moments at the beginning it felt clunky to me, but once I got into the story, either I didn't notice or it smoothed out.) I honestly didn't want it to end.
And then I read it in one sitting, because it's not very long but also because I couldn't stand not finding out how it ended. It's sweet and lovely, and Ella's thoughts and emotions spoke so deeply and truly to my own emotional journey and life as a trans woman.
I ADORED THE CRAP out of this story. I want more. I want to read more about Ella and Lizabetta and Ella's neighbour. Like I really liked that this was a retelling of Cinderella and at the same time it wasn't. Like it's good enough to stand on it's own and be it's own story away from the classic Cinderella fairy tale that most people know and either love or hate.
Now, a word of warning. If you think this is one of those person gets sex reassigned type stories, it isn't. As far as the story is concerned with telling us Ella still has all bodily organs that she was born with.
Also, look at the gorgeous cover! It's just...WOW.

One of the things that I would have loved to see with this story is explaining the relationship between the princess and the aforementioned person above (whose name escapes me at the moment). And I'd love to read a story with her courting the prince she wants to court.
Another that I would have loved to be told was if Ella naturally had a higher voice or not and if not, if she made her voice higher once she presented as Ella.
Overall though, I'd definitely recommend this book. Especially to trans girls everywhere. Though, I'm sure there are parts where the book messes up. But as a genderfluid person who isn't a trans girl/female/woman I am not the person to point them out.
I was honored to receive a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.
Ella is an really well developed character. A trans woman POC, she is feisty and spirited and able to save herself when it comes down to it. The author did an amazing job of working within the fairy tale and staying true to the feel of it while still making the story fresh and unique and inclusive. Loved the 'Princess' instead of the 'Prince', loved absolutely everything about Ella, how she found herself and stayed true to who she really was.
A sweet, beautiful, engaging story, I cannot recommend this highly enough. Read it, you won't regret it!
