The bad: It was a bit slow and some parts just seemed thrown in to make sure the story was plausible.
The epilogue: A fairy tale lover will enjoy the new way this is written as well as the heroine being able to handle herself.
Here, Cinderella isn't just a feisty, smart, resilient, unfairly abused housekeeper with a heart of gold - she also happens to be a skilled fighter and cat burglar with attitude to spare. I really enjoyed following her journey from servitude to freedom (no spoiler here, as it does still meet the expectations of a fairy tale) - and watching as she wins the love of a prince, who, like the one in EVER AFTER, comes to appreciate how strong and unique she is. Besides offering the main story, Lane's CINDERELLA tale also provides a much richer backstory for the terrible stepmother and stepsisters - and gives the reader rather satisfying endings for several other characters (good and evil) as well.
I highly recommend this book for those who appreciate fairy tales with a twist. And for what it's worth, I also enjoyed Lane's SNOW WHITE novella - which you can only receive by signing up for the email list!
Its a very different version of Cinderella than I guess I would have ever imagined. It still has Mean Stepmothers and stepsisters. She actually gets along with one of the stepsisters for awhile. But as this version has a little of a paranormal twist it comes that she cant really rely on any of these folks.
Her mom is killed 10 yrs earlier and we never meet the dad he is in comatose state in another room. This Cinderella meets her prince as she is hopping rooftops trying to catch the bad folks that seem to linger in her little village, she is also a thief of the night and in one escape she meets the prince and as he thinks she has stolen something that was suppose to be sent to his mother he chases her, jumping rooftops to rooftops and doing some mild fighting in between. Cinderella has been trained to fight so she can basically take care of herself and sometimes her step sister watches but doesn't tell. On this night she gets away and gets the stolen item to the person that trains her. She tells her this will be made into a weapn that will defeat the evil that has come into the lands/village. The next night she sneaks out she is on a mission to find out about another missing child and one of the higher ranking military has gone mad. Some others have done the same and it is also how her dad is just unaware of anything. On this night the Prince also goes to visit because it is his military. Again the fight and she injures the Prince knocks him unconscious and Then Carries this man through town on her back to her Trainer/Mentor that is also a healer of sorts. (a little to unbelievable to me, just not even manageable, is it magic?) You will have to read to find out.
So as he meets the Thief and now knows she is a woman, as he calls her throughout the book even after he learns her name as if it is an endearment, to me it gets kind of weird later that someone infatuated with you as the story always goes still calls her thief instead of Cinderella. Also she works continuously at home scrubbing the house, slips out at night so I guess she does not need sleep?
So Prince and Thief become friendly and decide they will try to work together to figure out what is going on...fighting and battles ensues and the Thief never uses a weapon yet Always Wins, Every single Time with her hands and very quick movement.
So no I am not going to tell you the entire story and newly changed Fable! It had a neat spin going with the paranormal that we had to figure out. The Heroine "Thief an or Cinderella" called both throughout the entire book bugged me, she is Cinderella with some skill and she only steals when it warrants something her Mentor tells her to do. She is a woman but fights like a man and can hold her own with the Prince or any person put in her path when she is on a mission regardless of home many but its always with a knockout punch or kick that is unrealistic to me.
The Hero/Prince I very much liked he fought with hands and swords killing when absolutely necessary.
We find out secrets and dishonor to Thief/Cinderella in the end the first thing she stole is made into a weapon, she does use it once
in all the boook like I said it had good potential, but you cannot make you Heroine be perfect ALL the time she cannot beat 6 men with bare hands, I guess in fairyland you can make it possible it was just to far off for me and the Thief name calling turned me off. I only saw he steal one time...
Its a good twist on a fairytale the book is OK and why I gave it 3 stars. It has to much filler, books starts to bog down and I got bored. So if your Heroine is going to fight she needs weapons heck she is a Thief so why not steal one, in this time of day of Prince and Queens. If in your books you always want an HEA you will find it and it is a stand alone, plot thickens and kind of goes in all different directions. As in all Cinderella she is just looking to get out of her misery and needs love in her life.
I was honored by Book Review 22 with a free review copy for my review.
My only slight criticism is that I'd have liked to have had a better resolution for the secondary characters, along the lines of what happens to the Earl (yes, that's deliberately vague - as I don't want to give things away). That criticism, however, is something of a stretch and I'm sure there are other readers who will not agree.
I don't give 5 stars to anything short of a true masterpiece (e.g, Stranger in a Strange Land, Dune, etc.) so I'm sticking with 4 stars here, but this was a well thought out, well written and really fun read - and definitely recommended.
Disclaimer: I received this book from the author in exchange for the promise of an honest review. I've done this sort of thing before, once with a sci-fi story by this author (using a different pen name) and several times with other authors. While I've not had any qualms about posting a negative review where warranted I'm happy that such was not needed here.
