Academy Award winners Russell Crowe and Renee Zellweger star in this triumphant, powerfully inspiring true story. In a time when America needed a champion, an unlikely hero would arise, proving how hard a man would fight to win a second chance for his family and himself. Suddenly thrust into the national spotlight, boxer Jim Braddock would defy the odds against him and stun the world with one of the greatest comebacks in history. Driven by love for his family, he willed an impossible dream to come true.

This is an inspiring film. It captures the ethos of an older generation that denied self, worked hard and sacrificed for others. Crowe lends a subdued dignity to the rough-and-tumble boxer from New Jersey; Renee Zellweger shines as his supportive wife; and Paul Giamatti is good as usual (he was nominated for an Academy Award for this performance).
The blu-ray transfer is pristine. Good detail on the visuals; little to no film grain; strong contrast; deep blacks, etc. The sound is great as well. If you really like this movie and are considering upgrading from DVD, it is worth it. Otherwise, the DVD is probably fine.
Parental Advisory: This film contains boxing-related violence, including discussions involving death in the ring. There is some inappropriate language, including abuse of God's name. It also has some trash-talking that involves human anatomy. The movie should be fine for teens, but perhaps not for smaller children.
I highly recommend this movie. Ron Howard has given us characters that we can care about and root for. Apart from the language, this is a throwback to different era of moviemaking. Well done!
There were no two low blows, no face slap and no moment near the end of Round 15 when Braddock was staggered wth Max closing in for a headshot kill. In reality, Baer lost his zest for headhunting after he killed a man in the ring. Worst of all was the elimination of Baer's Star of David from his trunks. Max was proud of his Jewish heritage and this symbol should've been retained. Political correctness is nonsense, especially if it disrupts the depiction of actual events.

I picked up Cinderella Man based on recommended on boxing movies after I really enjoyed the newer film Southpaw. I'm very happy that I did- this is a wonderful film! Boxing movies tend to be either very good or very bad, and I was hopeful that this would be the former since it is based off a true story. The immediate beginning may seem slow- but it rapidly draws you in after the pre-depression outdoor celebratory scenes. This movie has hope, betrayal, fear, sadness, joy, amazement, humility, and so many other emotions of life in it... If you enjoy boxing, and movies that will really hit you with some feels- this is a great pick.
