The only draw I can see between THE CINDERELLA SUBSTITUTE and Cinderella is that the heroine of the story (Jenni) lives in a dingy apartment (due to recent family issues) and the hero is a wealthy executive (Nate) who seems way out of her league (and is also her boss).
I cared for both characters, and the development of their relationship felt realistic. This is a sweet romance and the few kisses that are shared are tender yet passionate--as Nate struggles with the memory of his fiancée's tragic death, and Jenni recovers from the discovery of her birth mother, and neither are quite ready to engage in a romantic whirlwind. The way they take care of each other through their various trials is truly sweet, and it reminded me why I love Ms. Dixon's stories.
But it became clear about halfway through the book that they both loved each other (to the reader, who has the privilege of being inside each character's head alternatively), but Jenni and Nate remained ignorant and a refrain from Jenni's side of "watching her true love walk away" / "true love that could never be", etc. crossed the line from genre-repetitious to annoying. By the time the story ended, I was so frustrated by the constant back-of-my-mind search for how this related to Cinderella (when the main characters knew each other from the outset, there was no glass slipper metaphor, no fairy godmother, and while there was a party at the end, there were no secret identities or three dances or evil stepmother and stepsisters) that even the happy ending was unsatisfactory. I had to hunt down another romance afterwards.
That said, I will still give Ms. Dixon another chance because I enjoyed her New Bay Series.

At only 115 pages the story ended very abruptly with a few loose ends which may be resolved in another connected story. Even though the author doesn’t tell you it’s a connected story, I have read other books that have the Mayers family in it. This is Nate’s and Jenni’s story and their attraction and their fighting of it always seems to take a giant step back after taking a baby step forward. Their working relationship may have something to do with it since he’s her boss and she’s his personal assistant and she thinks she knows Nate’s feelings but she tends to misinterpret them. Most of the story line is work related or about Jenni’s family – both her birth mother and adopted parents. There is romance although it seems more like friendship and then ultimately love, but also heartache, tears, anxiety, anger and anxiousness as well as laughter and happiness too. There is a happily ever after that came out of the blue and needed a few more chapters or an epilogue to give better closure and make it seem more realistic.
I have read several of Dixon’s books before and they have all been quick reads. While I would hope for better closure and a little more length I will continue to read her books since her characters do seem real and she packs a lot into a few pages.
The main character has had triaged happen in his life and has completely shut out love. All the while his secretary has been there for him and has quietly fallen in love.
Through acceptance and love Nate is able to move on and embrace life again.
