Great musicians playing great, fresh new music. This album firmly establishes that Dylan Ryan is a major force in the post-jazz fusion movement. Each of Dylan’s songs on this album are dark but they also have a strong jazz/rock grove. Put this album to feel alive and to get ready for battle. Dylan’s band is in the ranks with Snarky Puppy , Kneebody and other young musicians for pushing the music that Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul, et al. created forty years ago for us. But Dylan’s Sand is a three piece band and they remind me of what the Police did as a three piece did for rock music thirty years ago, which is that pushed it to be better. Dylan’s drumming summons all the jazz and rock greats, Tony Williams, Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham, Elvin Jones, Lars Ulrich and Stewart Copland, but Dylan definitely has an original attack and style. The album is also really well recorded and mixed.

Phenomenal. It's rare to find jazz that kicks ass like this. I caught these guys a couple 'o times around LA and they were great live. This album seems to grab that live energy really well. I told some people they're " dark jazz " which I think fits. It moves, it's heavy, it's smart, and it's got great hooks, so if you're not a total jazz head, you can still get down.
