Circle of Three: A Novel Mass Market Paperback – May 29, 2001

“Gaffney’s characters are appealing and realistic…Readers will race through this book.”
New Orleans Times Picayune

“Poignant….Entertaining….As good as it gets.”
New York Post

No other author writes about the lives and friendships of women with more warmth and grace than New York Times bestseller Patricia Gaffney.  A true master of women’s fiction, with Circle of Three she flourishes the same breathtaking characterization and storytelling skills that made her previous novel, The Saving Graces, a readers’ favorite. The story of a woman grieving for her losses and her life, and her relationship with her overbearing mother and precocious young daughter, Circle of Three focuses on three generations of a troubled family, the anger and misunderstanding that separates them…and the love that holds them together. Gaffney does beautifully what Elizabeth Berg, Anne Rivers Siddons, and Anne Tyler also do so well: exploring the tricky bonds of family in novels both heart-soaring and heartbreaking.

From the Back Cover

Newly widowed, Carrie is overwhelmed by the guilt of knowing her marriage died long before her husband's fatal heart attack. Struggling to go on for the sake of her teenaged daughter, Ruth, and her overly possessive mother, Dana, Carrie slowly emerges from the sorrow that has embraced her and begins to pull her life together, with help from an unexpected source. Jess, Carrie's first love, re-enters her world and offers her the lifeline that will help her pull herself out of the drowning place she's been in.

Inspired with new purpose, and a passion she thought she'd never have again, Carrie must find a way to weave her new life -- and love -- into a family struggling with their own pain and disappointment, who find her newfound happiness a threat to their own precarious balance.

Wise, moving, and heartbreakingly real, Circle of Three offers women a deeper understanding of one another, of themselves, and of the perplexing and invigorating magic that is life itself.

Patricia Gaffney began her writing career with the publication of Sweet Treason, a historical romance set in revolutionary Scotland. Eleven romance novels later, she tried something different--The Saving Graces, a story of women's friendships, that ended up spending 17 weeks on the New York Times Bestsellers List.

Circle of Three, Flight Lessons, and The Goodbye Summer followed, all bestsellers that established Gaffney as a premier mainstream fiction writer.

Her new book is Mad Dash, the story of a happy marriage in trouble. It's due out in Spring 2008.

Gaffney, who lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, is currently at work on a novel about a man who changes his life when he finds out he's dying--then finds out he isn't. Working title: On Second Thought.

Another great book by this author. I highly recommend.

The author pretty much nailed it on the different characters in where they were in life and how they viewed each other, their particular ways of thinking, etc. I thought 'the arc' was a little far fetched but perhaps necessary to the story. Over all I did enjoy it eventhough it was not the kind of book I usually read.

great book, love Patricia Gaffney's other book, The Saving Graces, which I also got here. In fact I usually read her books twice after a few years they're even better!
Read these books, they are wonderful true to life real women's stories.

I love family stories and this was a good one. Lots of love and personal growth. My only negative comment is that changing speakers each chapter was confusing until you get to know the characters.

In this case, the third time is the charm! This is the third book of Gaffney's that I have read, and definitely the strongest of the three! Gaffney presents three generations of a family and each woman relays a portion of the story through their own point of view. The teenage daughter, in particular, has a strong perspective (particularly since there is not much language to differentiate between the mother and grandmother - without the chapter headings, their sections would definitely blur into one). And though the book rambles in sections, it is an enjoyable read with some very sweet moments between the characters and definitely contains elements that readers will recognize in their own lives.

Was a gift for my daughter-in-law. Patricia Gaffney is a favorite author of hers. Circle of Three was the third book I bought for her.

Good book about three generations of women. Being a daughter and a mother,
Made many parts of this very easy to relate to. I even laughed at some
Of the mother/teenager scenes.
