*****
We've seen all the various documentaries and news magazine segments attempting to cover the crop circle phenomenon, but virtually all of them have come up short in one way or another. Finally, there is a serious, thorough documentary on the controversial mystery, and it's available on DVD.

CircleSpeak - A Journey into the Heart of Crop Circle Country from New Land Films is without a doubt the best documentary I've seen about the crop formations that have been appearing in the agricultural fields for decades now. Besides being beautifully photographed, this film presents the most objective and balanced exploration of the cereal phenomenon. The filmmakers, thankfully, don't have an agenda and provide a forum for believers and skeptics alike - as well as the circlemakers, who claim to be responsible for the formations.

The film presents the mystery, looks at the best evidence, and listens to those who offer rational answers as well as those who say those answers aren't sufficient.

Focusing almost exclusively on the formations appearing in Britain, the filmmakers interview the people who have been in the thick of it for years.

The DVD package takes advantage of the medium and offers almost two hours of extras, in addition to the documentary. This is a very well done, comprehensive examination of the crop circles, and I highly recommend it to anyone even casually interested in the phenomenon. --Stephen Wagner

It's difficult not to talk in superlatives about this feature. CircleSpeak: A Journey into the Heart of Crop Circle Country navigates perhaps one of the most polarized topics in the alternative genre with ease - informing and teaching, without ever lecturing or sermonizing. The DVD begins with the quick introduction to the human face of crop circle research (and circlemaking), which sets the tone beautifully for the following hour and a half - at its heart, this is more a story about the people, rather than the circles.

What follows is an excellent summary of the history of the crop circles. Beginning with the first noticed circles in 1978, we are introduced to the personalities involved on a chronological basis. The balance of the documentary is evident here, in that the viewer often feels for the researchers who have devoted large parts of their life to researching the glyphs, and been deliberately deceived by hoaxers. The human story is what sets CircleSpeak apart.

The documentary also manages to get exclusive insights into the lives and opinions of the hoaxers - from the most prominent circlemakers, right through to the confession from John Wabe regarding the Oliver's Castle video. However, the mystery remains, as most hoaxers reveal that circlemaking seems to be a trigger event for strange experiences and the appearance of UFO-like objects.

Beyond the balance, and the human dimensions of the story, CircleSpeak also features absolutely breathtaking footage of the glyphs themselves - and whether the source is mysterious, or just hoaxers, they are still art of the highest order. Throw in two hours of extended interviews and deleted scenes, and this DVD is the complete package. Get it. --Greg Taylor

This is one of the very best documentaries I have seen on this subject in my two decades with the mystery. I highly recommend it for its honesty, fairness, and the courage shown by not side-stepping controversy. It is a MUST for those who really want to know what is going on inside and outside of the fields. --Colin Andrews, author - Crop Circles - Signs of Contact and Circular Evidence

The phenomenon of crop circles has been plagued by the same kind of controversy associated with UFOs - true believers and cultists are confronted by mocking skeptics, and a good measure of fraud and fakery is thrown in to completely muddy the waters. Meanwhile, the general public is left in confusion and moves on to matters of more pressing concern. This video is a needed corrective to the situation, and steers a course between credulity and mockery. All points of view are presented fairly, in my opinion, and any reaction - positive or negative - will come from the viewer himself, not from heavy-handed and manipulative editorializing.

This video treats crop circles as a potentially unexplained and unexplainable phenomenon, but gives due credit (if that is the word) to the ability of hoaxers (or circle artists, if you prefer) to create patterns that one might not have thought possible.

The "true believers" are here represented by the likes of Michael Glickman and Lucy Pringle, the sober scientific approach is exemplified by W.C. Levengood, and the hoaxers are represented by Doug Bower and a group of younger "circle artists." Among the more interesting individuals are those who - such as Colin Andrews - have seen their former "belief" in crop circles modified or even destroyed when confronted by the unforeseen skills (not to mention the remarkable tenacity) of the hoaxers.

I came away from this video thinking - for the first time - that it is at least possible that the entire crop circle phenomenon has been a vast tragi-comedy in which the unfulfilled spiritial yearings of post-Christian Europe have been toyed with by a cadre of skilled but heartless artisans.
