Johanna Swan is a survivor. She escaped death twice—as a child in China during the Boxer Uprising of 1900 and twelve years later as a young woman aboard the ocean liner Titanic. Now a forward-thinking suffragist and an heiress besides, Johanna intends to use her intelligence, energy, and fortune to help poor and immigrant women. Johanna manages life the way she manages her money. Invest sensibly. Never be obligated. Reduce risk. Keep control of your assets. But the emotional turmoil in her family and the growing confusion in her own heart when it comes to charismatic, sentimental and—she fears—deceitful Drew Gallagher are interfering with Johanna’s orderly existence. For all her logical decision making, it will be the shifting emotions of desire and despair that finally force Johanna to realize that love is more complex and life far less predictable than any business venture.

Review
JohannaSwan, orphaned daughter of missionaries, is trained as both a social worker anda nurse, and returns from Englandon a swanky ocean liner. It's 1912, and the liner is Titanic.
ThoughJohanna and her grandmother survive, a brief encounter with a doomed manconnects her to his brother back in Chicago, a newly rich industrialist whosecontradictions make him attractive and infuriating. Her small service ... places him in her debt, and she takes fulladvantage of this on behalf of the Anchorage,a branch of the Florence Crittenton homes for needy women ...
As usual, Hasley's historical research is flawless, and the other characters, like Johanna's genteel but vigorous grandmother, herdictatorial aunt and conflicted cousin add to the rich tapestry. The book islong but does not meander, and one wonders if the people Johanna meets inpassing will turn up in Hasley's next captivating book."

Do you recognize these American women? Jane Addams.Ida B. Wells-Barnett. Dr. Alice Hamilton. Dr. Kate W. Barrett. Donaldina Cameron. Gertrude Stein. Mary Cassatt. You'll find them all - and then some -in Karen's books, which intertwine the lives of fictional heroines and historical real-life women so closely and convincingly that you may need to check a history book to figure out which is which.
Hasley's 6-book Laramie Series spans the years between 1880 and 1919 with satisfying stories from America's past, each with a competent, courageous woman at its center. The books can stand independently and be enjoyed in any order. One reviewer wrote that "Hasley's impeccable writing" offered a "satisfying read from beginning to end."(ABJ, 2006)
The author's first stand-alone novel "The Dangerous Thaw of Etta Capstone" was a quarter finalist for Amazon's 2013Breakthrough Novel of the Year, the PW review stating that it was "subtle and effective." "Magnificent Farewell," a second stand-alone novel set during World War One, was a "highly recommended" Finalist in the 2016 Wishing Shelf Book Awards.
In 2014, Karen offered readers a trio of light-hearted Victorian romances. The Penwarrens Series ~ made up of "Claire, After All," "Listening to Abby," and "Jubilee Rose" ~ is the author's affectionate, admiring homage to Georgette Heyer.
Karen returned to America's heartland in 2017 with the first book of a new series set in 19th-century New Hope, Nebraska. As readers have come to expect, "What We Carry With Us" offers mystery, history, and romance with an engaging, strong-minded woman at its center.
Remarkable women. Unforgettable stories. All in historical settings.

About the author

Karen J. Hasley grew up in America's heartland. College research into 17th-century female poets showed her the rich treasures in women's lives of the past, and in 2006 Karen's first novel, "Lily's Sister," hit the stands. The rest is - quite literally - history.

Karen recently returned to America's heartland with the first book of a new series set in 19th-century New Hope, Nebraska. Of the book, one major newspaper review read, "... a lot of mystery, a realistic Western flavor, some romance, and some very fine writing ... Not a note strikes false in this exceptional story. Hasley continues to get better and better as she finds new heroines." (Akron Beacon Journal, 1/14/18) As readers have come to expect, "What We Carry With Us" (2017) offers mystery, history, and romance with an engaging, strong-minded woman at its center.
Return to New Hope in book 2 of the series, "Surprised by Shadows," (2018) and again in book 3, "Through Seasons of Fire." (2019) The people of New Hope, Nebraska, are worth a return visit!

*My sister recommended this to me. I confess the cover and the title put me off and, had I just stumbled upon it, I wouldn’t had picked this up to read. So glad she suggested it. I’m going to see what else this author has written. Brilliant!
Karen Hasley has a true gift of exploring complex human emotions and of writing them in such a way that exactly quantifies things we’ve all felt but might not have been able to express. Her ability to write a slow burn romance that melts you, while only implying more intimate moments, was incredible and appreciated by this reader who doesn’t want to read a bunch of smut.
I don’t summarize books in reviews. I just want to thank the author for taking me on an exquisite journey with this book, and want to encourage other readers to give this book a chance, too. I look forward to reading her others!
This was a well-written book. It did seem to drag in a few places, and would have been better if it had been trimmed a bit, but the main characters were fascinating, with depth and complexities not usually found in such a novel. There were a few mild curse words, and it was written in first person, which I don’t prefer, but it was still an interesting read. I gave it 4.5, which rounded up to a five.
