While growing up, my peers and I use to hear gossip about the lives of people who worked the circuses and carnivals that passed through town. This book, The Circus, brought it all to life for me. I had no difficulty feeling I was part of the behind-the-scenes activities of the circus performers. Reading this story felt like actually living the gossip I grew up with. Not only that, the story is quite enjoyable, and at times a bit humorous to read a story written with British or Irish colloquialisms. This read flowed smoothly and though I wondered where the plot was leading, I had no idea what to expect. That made the surprise twist at the end more enjoyable. Looking back over the whole story, the ending answered questions I had during the whole read. The ending really caught me by surprise.
