From the Inside Flap
For the next ten years, the opportunities for internetwork professionals will be immense. However, the challenge of possessing the proper knowledge base and skill set will be faced by every internetworking professional. The challenge is two-fold: (1) how does one develop his internetworking knowledge base and skill sets to the highest possible level and (2) how does one stay current in this rapidly changing field! Cisco Systems offers a solution: the Cisco IOS (Internetworking Operating System). By mastering the Cisco IOS, an internetworking professional can supply virtually any internetworking solution. The IOS has its origins in the routing world but has expanded to LAN switching, ATM switching, multilayer switching, voice-data integration and security.
From an internetwork education perspective, the IOS configuration set, show commands and debugging tools provide a technician with a valuable insight into how internetworking technologies operate. For example, having access to IOS debugging tools and a network protocol analyzer such as a Network Associates Sniffer in a testbed environment allows a technician to develop a strong technical understanding of how internetwork protocols operate at a high level of technical detail. IOS debugging tools should be used with extreme caution in a production internetwork. However, in an educational environment, IOS debugging tools should be used to enhance the internetwork education process. One of the goals of this book is to demonstrate how debug output can be used to enhance the internetwork education process.
A broader goal of this book is to demonstrate the power of the Cisco IOS from both a production and education perspective. An internetwork professional that learns the IOS well enough to attain CCIE certification has developed an internetworking knowledge base and skill set that will allow him to accelerate his learning of other internetworking technologies. Therefore, mastering the Cisco IOS and the related internetworking technologies to the point of attaining CCIE certification should be viewed as a foundational beginning rather than an end. Once you have attained your CCIE, you must look ahead to what new internetworking topics you will master. However, as you learn new topics, you will apply the precious internetworking analysis skills you developed while you prepared for CCIE certification.
In sum, I hope this book assists in developing the reader's internetwork analysis skills. By developing methodologies to think like a quality internetworking professional, you will be able to rapidly adapt to the constant changes occurring in this industry. By developing methodologies to think like a quality internetworking professional, you will be better prepared to attain your CCIE. Therefore, a clear road to optimizing your internetworking analysis skills is mastering the Cisco IOS. Once you learn how to speak IOS and think IOS to the highest level of technical detail, improved internetworking analysis skills come along with the territory. Good luck on your journey to CCIE certification!

I've noticed several reviews remarking that this isn't a good book for the IE written. Having just passed that exam, I respectfully disagree. While that is certainly not the focus of the book, I saw several topics addressed that cleared up some questions I had while taking the written.
I would highly recommend that if you're planning for the written IE, go ahead and purchase this book now. After all, if you're serious about IE lab prep, you'll be buying the book anyway. Put it to work for you sooner than later.
Caslow does a fine job of tying the different parts of the Cisco IOS together in a manner that makes it easy to understand. The way that he carefully points out potential problems and creates lists for the steps in each process is refreshing when compared to other books.
BRS was intended for CCIE candidates, but it would be perfect for any Cisco specialist, whether or not you are pursuing certification. The in-depth understanding of each topic will be very useful on-the-job as well as for test preparation.
- It covers almost all major areas. - The language is very nice! I enjoyed to read it. - It has very few mistakes. - It's not just a cram to pass exam and forget everything. It was written for real life and it'd be very useful if you even don't want to get certified and just looking for a good Cisco book.
Some people think it's to complex to start with, but I think you can read it any time. Even my wife, who knows nothing about nets, told me that she found some interesting things there when she occasionally read a couple pages :) Yes, this books includes many very advanced topics but it's written very well, from easiest things to advanced, and you 'll find it usefull anyway. It's a feature of real classics - you enjoy it even if you don't understand all details :)
The main bad thing is that it's obviously not enough to pass CCIE. I read it after passing CCIE written and many questions from real exams are not included in this book. But it doesn't mean you don't need this book for the test preparation. All my friends CCIE used it for preparation and everybody told me that it's the best resource. But CCIE is kind of exam which obviously requires more then just read one book. Instead of looking for the easiest way just try to study hard, read as much as possible and you'll get it! Good luck!
The author does a better job of including figures, tables, diagrams and router screen shots in this 900 plus-page reference manual. The book is made of the more advanced to expert level, as some of the topics are very detailed in the explanations.
Areas like Frame Relay, ATM, DDR, ISDN, the Catalyst 5000 and VLANs are the first part of the book, then the authors give you a 40-page breakdown of IP Routing and addressing which is much better than previous versions.
Covering protocols RIP and RIP 2, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF and BGP as with the first edition is very good and more complete. They also include new sections for IS-IS and non-IP routing protocols like IPX, AppleTalk and DecNet.
More coverage was given to bridging techniques like transparent and translational and DLSw+ as well as access list for IP and Non-IP. I like the addition of voice/data configuration and troubleshooting.
There is also sample scenarios that you can work with. With the inclusion of the updates and changes this is a much better book than the first edition.
Caslow cover the CCIE exam with the utmost detail and gives you a book that will surely be a necessary reference in your quest for the CCIE certification. This book is highly informative, yet for those starting out in the CCIE arenas, you might find this book a little more advanced.
The book is broken down into several levels and each level builds upon the one before. The book gives you everything you would need to pass the exam, including test-taking tips along the way. Your job is to organize the note and study.
The $69.99 price tag may appear to be a hefty price, but the information is well worth it. What the Author may want to do is include a cd with practices test and possibly a CBT program to follow the book. Overall I think this book is just what the Cisco Professional needs.
