The Cisco wifi valet router comes with a USB drive that was designed to make set up easy - but it does not, and I'm pretty sure this is the reason the router has been discontinued. It gives the router a name and password but, without working properly (something I've not seen with either of my routers tried on several computers) you will be unable to find the password to the cleverly autogenerated valet name. As an example, mine was auto-named PurpleShark but I could not find the password to actually make it connect to the autogenerated name.
However, despite that oversight, the router is very clean looking and once set up manually it is very fast. The manual set up is easy enough.
Set up help:
If you're struggling to set it up, hit the reset button in the back of the valet unit and wait for the automated "Cisco######" to appear in your wifi connections. It should be open and not require a password. Then once connected to the network, go to 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 and this will bring up the set up and security information. The default name is user and the default password is admin (this is true for most all routers - no upper cases or spaces). Once in the set up site you can rename the SSID (the public name of your wifi) and the type of encryption and passcode. I recommend using WPA2 and writing your new password down on the underside of the router/valet.
Also, protip; while in the settings - change your DNS servers to googles by replacing the 0.0.0.0 to 188.8.131.52 and 184.108.40.206 (leave the additional two rows as 0.0.0.0) - this will DNS errors next to impossible and has resolved issues I once had with Netflix.
UPDATE = DEC 6 Optimum made a service call this morning and installed their own wirelss router free of charge.(no monthly charge either). The router works beautifully and there are no problems with my computer as with the Cisco Valet Plus.
Dec 19 - Still working beautifully and provides WiFi for my iPad and my grandchildren's 2 Kindles.
When my last router started to go down this path I did a fair amount of research on line (including reading reviews on Amazon) and decided that this Cisco Valet Plus was the one for me. It's unbelievable easy to install since it comes with a memory stick that you simply start by plugging it into a USB port of each device you want to synch to. I did our PC, Dell laptop, and Macbook in maybe five minutes total. No data to enter, just literally plug and play!
The signal from this router seems to be way more powerful than any I've had before.
I bought a Ipad this week and wanted to synch it to this router. Problem is, the Ipad doesn't have USB ports and I couldn't figure out how to do the synch. I called Cisco's 24 hr. tech. support line and got immediate help. Basically, they just said plug the memory stick back into the PC which is where my router is located and follow the on line instructions. From there, all I had to do was enter my router password on the Ipad (since I have a secure connection) and away we went. So, the only complaint I've got is that the router comes with minimal instructions and it should have been stated that before you call the 800 tech. support line, plug in the memory stick which contains all of the operating instructions. Of course, if I were sharper I'd have thought of that on my own >)!
I paid more for this router than the others I've used, but it is way worth it!
