Note: following procedure is more for personal use. Will be attempting setup on an SG200-24 at some point.
Basic/rudimentary skill level with IOS.
1) update to latest firmware from Cisco, I updated mine via GUI.
set latest firmware to active.
2) put it in L3 mode, either via GUI or IOS
save settings to startup config if you want to keep them.
3) create vlan to run dhcp server, don't use vlan 1.
4) Assign/provision vlan to ports for clients. (leave WAN/G9/G10 on vlan 1)
5) connect to your WAN/ISP to get IP and switch it to static
or assign it a static IP
6) enable DHCP server and setup network pool for DHCP
Note: not all settings available in GUI. Add DNS via IOS or via DHCP options if you know option code.

7) Add ip routes,
vlan1 should already be setup

8) Add DNS and setup SNTP/Time settings via GUI.
If all was done correctly you should be able to obtain DHCP & DNS automatically via VLANxx on the untagged ports you've set it to.
I had considered the SG200-08, but after reading through the PDF manual for these SG300-10 switches – the feature rich set of offerings made these two ideal for me to explore a managed environment vs a smart switch. By setting one of these two as L3 offers the vlan routing I don’t think obtainable by the SG200 series. I also checked out some of the Netgear options like the GS108T-NAS smart switch, but these Netgear products, from what I could tell, do not support ipv6, something I would like to eventually experiment with. So the best option for me were these SG300 series.
Something else I noticed, I believe instead of using Cisco proprietary features such as VTP, it seems these switches use industry standard alternatives like GVRP. I saw this in various configs for these devices which I thought was both interesting and convenient.
I was curious about the hardware version of these switches through Amazon and they are the latest v2 hardware set “SRW2008-K9 V02” allowing me to apply the latest firmware version.
Over all I am very pleased with these switches, they offer everything I can conceivably want and more then I probably need but as a techie this offers a lot to experiment and learn.
EDIT: So as I said it was end user error. I finally got the correct firewall rules in PFSense to get the vlans to work. This is a great switch I recommend it.
