For those who know Cisco, you know what you are getting. This is not a Catalyst class switch, but it does meet my needs in a small business environment. I recommend it on that basis.
The feature set is amazing. You get big brand complex features, right out of the box. You've found a switch that genuinely appears to do everything you could need, from VLANs to Link Aggregation, from MAC and 802.1x filtering, to provider edge port isolation. There's fully configurable Logging, QoS, management, IPv6 and many many more that I'm not personally using. Hmm, I should also mention that the full online HTML help inside the UI is a great addition to people doing config with these devices for the first time.
Management and Configuration is smooth and painless through either the GUI or via the CLI on the recent firmware upgrades. Those familiar with IOS will find things that are familiar in the CLI, as well as frustrations when things aren't quite IOS.
There is great consistency between the 300 series and the 200 series devices, so in a mixed network, administration should be fairly simple.
Cisco have already put out a couple of firmware upgrades for this device, and unlike the Enterprise class products, you don't need a support contract to download them. Simply register a CCO account, and the small business site will let you download the upgrades for free.
This switch has generally been very stable, with no need to reboot for months of runtime.
Mechanically, rackmount hardware is included, sturdy and well built. The fans inside this model are MUCH quieter than competing d-Link and Netgear products, and seem to potentially be temperature linked (I have heard them cycling up and down ever once in a while).
I have seven variants of this device in my network. No issues with any of them. A solid purchase.
Happy Networking !
We use these for our small business clients as it gives us full manageability and a very affordable price. These are comparable to the Dell 6248 switches which cost about $2,000 more.
The seller is an excellent company and serviced many of the businesses I worked for in the past. They are attentive to details and are available for help even with installation (doubt it's necessary with this beast).
I researched switches for ages before settling in on this one. I needed it to have the support and reliability that can only come from this model. I am not interested in PoE so I chose not to go with the -P model (SG 300-52P), but instead chose the SG 300-52. The 52 port model included increased bandwidth above the other port models as well as provides extra capacity for devices such as network printers, scanners, faxes, multifunction devices, pc's and laptop as well as servers and routers/modems.
My setup took less than a few moments and tested this for over three weeks. I will install in the branch office next week but expect no troubles. Many have reported that there is high noise with the fans on this model. I disagree. I have worked with many other models in datacenters that I have managed and this puppy is quiet enough to use in a home office. No other "beast" model from vendors were this well suited for my application. I love netgear but this is the one I settled with and for the price I feel it was a no-brainer.
I don't like making purchases and then wondering later if it was the right choice or second guessing the quality of the product. This unit is well designed and well supported for the life of the product.
Excellent equipment; Excellent price; Very fine company.
I would recommend this seller and this product to anyone looking to upgrade their small or medium offices to Gigabit. It also support advanced networking features to take advantage of ethernet grouping (teaming) for server-based NIC cards from Intel. I use the HP 364T PCIe x4 lane adapters with this unit. I could not be happier.
