Embrace the effortless style that comes with a Citizen Eco-Drive watch. Imaging never having to worry about winding a watch or making sure it has a functional battery. The perfect everyday timepiece that rarely requires your attention, wearing an Eco-Drive allows you to turn your attention to the more important things in life.
As a true manufacture d’horlogerie, CITIZEN integrates a comprehensive manufacturing process from creating individual components to a watch’s final assembly. It’s an artisan’s approach to watch making based on pushing forward the boundaries of technology and leveraging our experience toward exploring new possibilities.
One pivotal technological breakthrough was the development of a light-driven watch. CITIZEN pioneered this engineering innovation well ahead of other watch manufacturers as early as 1976, which led to the launch of the highly acclaimed Eco-Drive in 1995. Utilizing electrical power converted from virtually any light source, this extraordinary innovation changed forever the way watches could be powered. Eco-Drive eliminated the need to ever replace batteries, which made it especially beneficial to areas where such specialist batteries were not obtainable. This leveled the field for citizens of virtually every country to be able to experience unrestricted joy of wearing and using a CITIZEN watch.
The product development policy, “The Fusion of Technology and Beauty,” remains a constant motivation for us to merge cutting-edge technology with perfection of design beauty, which as a consequence inspires people to strive to be their best at any time.
CITIZEN launches a new campaign in collaboration with Wieden+Kennedy, Better Starts Now. This is the simple belief that no matter who you are or what you do, it is always possible to make something better — and now is the time to start doing it. We believe that better and now are both infinite, and that there is always a next ‘better’ and a new ‘now’ in which you can start pursuing it. It was clear from the onset of this project that we are dedicated to this ideal…not to the past but to the present, and all the way we can improve it. To help communicate this belief to the world we have created a new global CITIZEN brand movie, brand identity and brand website that represents out Better Starts Now philosophy.

I had been thinking about an "Atomic Watch" for some time. I finally gave myself a Father's Day present, this watch. Like the previous watch, it charges the battery with light. Even better, it sets the time automatically using Atomic Clocks in various locations. It also switches DST automatically.
It arrived with a good charge. I set the time zone, which is easy to do, turned on "manual" signal detection, and placed it in a west facing window. Within about 20 minutes, it had synched with the atomic clock and the time was correct.
I find the dial VERY readable. I don't miss the bells and whistles. If you want them, Citizens makes similar watches with them. I highly recommend this watch.
While I waited for it to arrive, I decided to do a bit of research on the Citizen website and I found that they have movies on how to operate different watches - much better than reading a "dry" instruction manual...and much easier to follow.
So, I finally got the watch, followed the step by step instructions from the video and I was wearing my watch less than 10 minutes after I had opened the box! The watch itself is very nice looking, easy to read, clean lines, a bit on the big side (but that makes it easier to read, so a +)
I live in Northern VA, so I could not receive any radio signals during the day - but at night I left the watch on a window sill facing due West, and next day...voila! the watch had set itself to the correct time and day.
I really like this "set & forget" concept - and added plus is that you really do not have to worry about batteries, as long as you give your watch some sunshine! (or any other light source for that matter - LED lights work great!)
Overall, highly recommended! Now, I'm hooked on this technology! :-)
-The watch itself is extremely durable. The sapphire crystal is completely undamaged. I didn't think it was possible. I thought "surely it will have at least a small scratch after a year", but no. Not even one. The stainless steel case is barely scratched, just a little on the bezel that you have to look for to find, so i'm very pleased there. I was somewhat worried about the writing around the face (the cities) chipping over time, but it shows very little damage, just a small scratch that's hard to see. The band is somewhat scratched, though Its pretty minor scratching to be expected from everyday use. The clasp is pretty scratched up though, with a few very visible ones. Looks quite a bit more worn that it should in my opinion. Also the band does squeak a little bit. Not nearly badly enough to annoy you, but enough to wonder why such a nice watch has a band that squeaks, but only for a second. Not a huge deal. I had to put the watch in my pocket for about 15 min one day, and ever since then the band has never quite been the same. Its never closed quite as sweetly as it did originally (the click of it closing was beautiful), so the band is, once again, not the greatest (though this may have been more my fault)
-Functionally, its a marvel of modern engineering, and its why i bought it. After a year, it still amazes me, to the same extent that it did the day I got it, that this tiny little thing picks up a radio signal from 1,000 miles away (I live in Michigan) and sets itself for me every morning. Well, not every morning, it might miss a day maybe once a week, but the most it's ever been off by is about 2 seconds, which i can absolutely live with. Then there's the fact that its solar powered. It just keeps getting cooler and cooler. I'm not going to lie, at first i wasn't so sure about this. I was worried it might not get enough light, but I've never seen it go into its little 'second hand skips every other second' low power indicating mode, so i guess i had noting to worry about!
Few little things that bugged me =
- Cant change time (I would like to have this ability, but that pretty much defeats the purpose of the watch being atomic so its pretty understandable that I don't get to do that)
- The glow in darkness is very weak, not a deal breaker by any means but slightly disappointing.
- The band is not very good in more than one way. It looks nice and fits the watch well, but isn't overly durable. I just hope the pins are better than the band.
Overall, for the price, it doesn't get any better than this. Its durable and hides what little damage it does get very well. Its extremely functional and extraordinarily low maintenance. And probably my favorite part is its mastery of melding amazing technology with modern class. I absolutely love the watch itself, but the band may have to go. It gets 5 stars because my only issue was with the band, which it easily replaceable with something better. Even getting a new band, the watch is still an good price for what it does.
