I recently read Harlan Lebo's detailed book on Orson Welles called a Filmmaker's Journey. I learned of his 1990 book on the making of Citizen Kane. I am glad I bought the book which contains over 85 pictures of the movie; interviews with persons who aided Welles in making the film and period reviews of Citizen Kane. Orson Welles (1915-1985) made his first Hollywood movie Citizen Kane for RKO studios. Welles was already a famous stage actor and director and had been made famous by the War of the Worlds broadcast that scared a nation when broadcast on CBS. Welles assembled a great team to make Citizen Kane often considered the best movie in history. The film earned nine Academy Award nominations winning only for the co-screenplay written by Herman Mankiewicz and Orson Welles (who wrote what is still in dispute!). Welles was the director producer, star and screenwriter of the story of the fictional Charles Foster Kane owner of a chain of newspapers (Kane is fictional but the Hearst press and his critics charged Welles with basing the character on William Randolph Hearst the famous publisher of news).
Harlan Lebo has done a good job in presenting a fine volume which gives the reader a good background and understanding of a great film classic. Recommended,.

Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
In this volume, illustrated by over 100 never-before-published photographs, Lebo chronicles the intricacies of this masterpiece's creation. Also included is a detailed account of RKO Studio's imbroglio with William Randolph Hearst, upon whom the character of Charles Foster Kane was based. Hearst exercised his formidable wealth and power as a newspaper magnate to halt Citizen Kane 's initial production and later release. With 1991 marking the film's 50th anniversary, there will be additional interest in Citizen Kane , so libraries should be sure to have this on their shelves and also stock up on the video: despite the passage of years this remains on everyone's "best" list.

A coffeetable size book chronicling the production history of the film Citizen Kane

Disappointed in the print quality of the photos. Kane is special because of the quality of the cinematography and the deep-focus technique employed. I expected this book to demonstrate those qualities with the included stills. I was saddened that the author (or publisher) decided to settle for low-quality, fuzzy stills throughout the book. It was a cheap move unworthy of a great film.

Included in the book are eighty-five photos, mostly off-screen shots by Alexander Kahle, the RKO staff snapper. I thought it was a pity the book wasn't better produced to show of the photos, studio documents and the twenty-page souvenir program featured in the book's back pages. Nicely a long Index is included.
As historical background to the movie rather than an aesthetic analysis of Citizen Kane (plenty of these listed by Amazon) Lebo's book can't be beat.

The making of Welles masterpiece is almost as fascinating as the movie itself and Harlan Lebo has provided a very readable account of how Kane was made. I think this is as good as Pauline Kael's 1971 `Raising Kane' though that has the very real advantage of having the shooting script and the interesting RKO Cutting Continuity script. Lebo's book doesn't need these as he looks at Hollywood, how the movie was made and sold, its reception when released in 1941 and eventual triumph.
