From the manufacturer
For over 40 years, Citizen's proprietary Eco-Drive technology has served as the prime example of how the brand is dedicated to the world and making its environment a better place. A simple yet revolutionary concept, Eco-Drive harnesses the power of light from any natural or artificial light source and converts it into energy, eliminating the need for any battery replacement. Using renewable energy to keep Citizen Eco-Drive watches running forever.
For a rugged look with a comfortable fit, this Citizen military inspired timepiece fits the bill. The Citizen Chandler is featured here in black ion-plated stainless steel case, dark green Cordura strap and black dial. Added features include analog day/date and12/24-hour time. Featuring our Eco-Drive technology – powered by light, any light. Never needs a battery. Caliber number 8729.
As a true manufacture d’horlogerie, CITIZEN integrates a comprehensive manufacturing process from creating individual components to a watch’s final assembly. It’s an artisan’s approach to watch making based on pushing forward the boundaries of technology and leveraging our experience toward exploring new possibilities.
One pivotal technological breakthrough was the development of a light-driven watch. CITIZEN pioneered this engineering innovation well ahead of other watch manufacturers as early as 1976, which led to the launch of the highly acclaimed Eco-Drive in 1995. Utilizing electrical power converted from virtually any light source, this extraordinary innovation changed forever the way watches could be powered. Eco-Drive eliminated the need to ever replace batteries, which made it especially beneficial to areas where such specialist batteries were not obtainable. This leveled the field for citizens of virtually every country to be able to experience unrestricted joy of wearing and using a CITIZEN watch.
The product development policy, “The Fusion of Technology and Beauty,” remains a constant motivation for us to merge cutting-edge technology with perfection of design beauty, which as a consequence inspires people to strive to be their best at any time.
CITIZEN launches a new campaign in collaboration with Wieden+Kennedy, Better Starts Now. This is the simple belief that no matter who you are or what you do, it is always possible to make something better — and now is the time to start doing it. We believe that better and now are both infinite, and that there is always a next ‘better’ and a new ‘now’ in which you can start pursuing it. It was clear from the onset of this project that we are dedicated to this ideal…not to the past but to the present, and all the way we can improve it. To help communicate this belief to the world we have created a new global CITIZEN brand movie, brand identity and brand website that represents out Better Starts Now philosophy.

Forgive the rant, but all of the above issues are how the watch performs after sitting in the pitch dark for months or longer. I.E. the dark box that it comes in. My watch did these things too. A day and a half later and it works great (had to adjust the time). I watched a Youtube video of an "expert" making these same claims, even going so far as saying it was his last Citizen, because after he sent it in for replacement, the new one did the exact same things... when he pulled it out of... the... dark... box... that... it's... shipped in. My favorite is the MANY complaints that the band is too short. Its a standard length band. I'm 6'3", 215lbs. There's nothing about me that's small. It fits me just fine. Band will require some break in time like many others. Its a tough band.
I rarely write reviews. I write them when I think its important. Its a good watch.
Its a good watch. Its not a great watch... those cost great money.
I don't like nylon or metal watch bands due to their thickness so I bought a silicone band for mine as I find it more comfortable. This watch takes a 20mm band even though the description says the band is 19mm. I bought the Barton quick release silicone band in army green to keep the original look of the watch. I think it looks better and is more comfortable. The original band was easy to get off. I just stuck my nail in between where lug meets the band, pushed down and out, and it popped right off.
Overall, I really like the watch. It's easy to read and I didn't want to have to change batteries so I like that it's solar. I wanted something outdoorsy/tactical looking and this watch really looks sharp (in my opinion) with the black on green.I don't anticipate any problems with it, but if something crops up, I will update my review.
The face of the watch is black. The numbers of the face of the watch are large and coated with a luminous material so that they glow in the dark. The hour, minute and seconds hands are also coated in the same luminous material as are the tick-marks for the minutes. There are three indicator dials noting the day-of-the-week, the date, and the hour in military time.
The watch came charged and operated immediately upon pushing the setting knob into the housing. I thoroughly read the instructions and it noted that if the watch needed charging, the second hand would count off approximately two seconds at a time. I left the watch out on a window ledge for the first day to let it get as much sunlight on the watch as possible to insure it was fully charged.
I don't have any issues with the band as it fit me well. I don't have exceptionally thick wrists, so I can't comment on it being too short.
I've only had the watch for a short time, but it seems like it will be a good one. This is my second Citizen Eco-Drive and I'm hoping it will serve me as well as my first one which I've had for several years now.
