Will is plonked un-ceremoniously and suddenly into a totally different almost alien land and is luckily befriended by Daniel who was also suddenly transported some years before. Daniel is making himself a life there now, but Will must find a way to get home. This poses a true challenge as there is no technology. As Will understands it is probably hopeless, the myth of The City Beyond The Sands poses more and more likely to be a place where he may find answers and possibly help. Circumstances allow for him to be accompanied on his quest. Learning all the time about how different and challenging this new land is.
The question of what would be the possible differences of cultures as people are suddenly dropped into an alternate universe? Here, so far history seems to be only a couple of a hundred years old. With different races arriving from different times in our known timeline poses some interesting interactions with the beliefs and society brought along. What adaptations to their new environment are needed and how will they live?
Fascinating and really want to know the answers too.
The plot is SciFi in the sense that the location is not Earth but it is much more adventure than previous works but, in my opinion, being off earth gives the author more freedom to unleash his imagination.
The final cliffhanger left me wishing for more.
In this action packed novel there is friendship, sword fights, horses, camels, sea chases, ape men, neanderthals, bat creatures, a mysterious city, desert, mongols, savage tribesman and more.
As the author states it is written in the spirit of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Robert E Howard, although the style is much more modern and reader friendly. In a way it reminds me of the black and white chapter plays I used to see during the holidays, with excitement and peril at every turn. It is full of ideas and a constant movement through a detailed patchwork world where the protagonists constantly encounter new people, cultures and strange creatures.
The story is written as a series of short sharp chapters that keep you reading and in a way it is the story itself is the main character of the book, fleshing out a world that is surprising, exotic and, above all, deadly. The novel ends on a cliffhanger, and I for one, am very interested in finding out what happens next...
Would I be interested in reading more work by this author? Maybe. Do I want to read the 2nd book in the series...maybe..depending on the price. So, I went to look at the 2nd book price and see $3.99. I stop. I do not think the 2nd book is worth $3.99. I might pay $1.99. I get offering the 1st book to get people interested but I have an issue with the 2nd jumping to $3.99. If the author wants to keep pulling people in then a progressive pricing structure makes more sense to me.
So, I won't be adding book #2 to my reading list
