I was really excited to see City of Lies because it was about the investigation into the murder of the Notorious BIG. If you know the story of 2 Pac and Biggie you already know who killed them. If you don’t this will give a good fictional account of what happened. What City of Lies adds is the politics of the Los Angeles Police Department and its role in the investigation. The message is about institutional obstructionism.
Johnny Depp’s character is based upon a real former LAPD detective that was part of the Biggie case. Depp is very laid back but has an obsession about the murder. He has one really funny part when he pulls a prank on Forest Whitaker who is a reporter doing a retrospective article on Notorious BIG.
Overall City of Lies is very engaging. The story laid out is intriguing and the theme is easily believable.
