There were a few issues. There were a couple points of continuity missed. The one that comes to mind is at one point the lead character throws his empty gun away. In the next scene, he uses the gun again. Characters are often badly injured or drugged and seem to slough it off more easily than would seem natural. And the amount of physical damage and sheer athletic endurance - let alone luck - needed by the main character was sometimes hard to swallow. My only other complaint, though a minor one, is that the book did contain a surprising amount of sexuality - more so than is generally common in this type of literature. Though not gratuitous, it did seem somewhat out of place.
Overall a very good work and highly recommended to anyone looking for a good, spooky cliffhanger of a read.
But bear in mind the Oliver Twist angle. This isn't adult noir or urban horror. Our hero Stevrin is fifteen and most of the main players are teens who are part of his "crew". There is death and mayhem and bullets and razors and some brutality, but this isn't particularly gory or violent by present standards. The fun and appeal here is more in the rakish charm and daring of Stevrin as he navigates the plot, deals with villains, and undertakes to solve the mystery of what threatens Lavorgna. His crew feels like a teen version of those "Dirty Dozen" mashups of characters you used to get all the time in action movies, and that was just fine by me. A few of the secondary characters stand out, and at a minimum the interactions between and among the characters keep the book screaming along. Think Danny-Ocean-Meets-Cthulhu.
The upshot is that this felt to me like a fine gritty young YA entertainment, with a solid but not flashy style, fast pacing, clever plotting, and some well crafted action and suspense. Very satisfying. (Please note that I found this book a while ago while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. It is currently a kindleunlimited choice. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)
While Jack's other writings really remind me of golden age pulp serials this is different, more modern. Perhaps it is the references to alchemical drug addictions or the fairly explicit sexuality (1 scene) or the pacing - it reads more as a modern story. It's generally an easy, captivating, escapist read - there are no deep metaphors or allegories here (or perhaps I am just too thick to see them). It's good, fun storytelling for the 18+ crowd.
An absolutely must read for any fan of dystopian or steam punk fiction or just any aficionado of Sci Fi.
