A New York Times bestseller!
A GMA3 Summer Reading Squad Selection!
“Ingeniously plotted, and a grin-inducing delight.” —People
“Will keep young readers glued to the page…So when do I get the sequel?” —Beth McMullen, author of Mrs. Smith’s Spy School for Girls

In this thrilling new series that Stuart Gibbs called “a must-read,” Edgar Award winner James Ponti brings together five kids from all over the world and transforms them into real-life spies—perfect for fans of Spy School and Mrs. Smith’s Spy School for Girls.

Sara Martinez is a hacker. She recently broke into the New York City foster care system to expose her foster parents as cheats and lawbreakers. However, instead of being hailed as a hero, Sara finds herself facing years in a juvenile detention facility and banned from using computers for the same stretch of time. Enter Mother, a British spy who not only gets Sara released from jail but also offers her a chance to make a home for herself within a secret MI6 agency.

Operating out of a base in Scotland, the City Spies are five kids from various parts of the world. When they’re not attending the local boarding school, they’re honing their unique skills, such as sleight of hand, breaking and entering, observation, and explosives. All of these allow them to go places in the world of espionage where adults can’t.

Before she knows what she’s doing, Sara is heading to Paris for an international youth summit, hacking into a rival school’s computer to prevent them from winning a million euros, dangling thirty feet off the side of a building, and trying to stop a villain…all while navigating the complex dynamics of her new team.

A fun story for the whole family
4 out of 5 stars
A fun story for the whole family
Sarah Martinez finds herself sitting for trial after hacking into the New York City foster care system. With the possibility of juvenile hall imminent, she is ready to resign to her fate, until a mysterious lawyer – dubbed “Mother” – shows up to save the day. He proposes a new opportunity for her: come to Scotland with him and join an elite group of adolescent spies. It seems like too good of an opportunity to pass up! But can Sarah fit in with her new brigade…while also stopping a villain from committing crimes on a global scale? The moment I picked up City Spies, I knew I had to suspend disbelief. This is a book written for children, so some of the cartoonish aspects of the characters (and their unbelievable talent) have to be looked at through a less critical lens. Once I abandoned that, this book was a ton of fun. With nods towards the traditional heist stories, with a bit of James Bond and Harry Potter thrown in for good measure, City Spies takes us on a journey of not only espionage, but friendship and teamwork. Not only are the characters in City Spies diverse – with different races, and even a character who is neurodivergent – but many children will see themselves in Sarah (or Brooklyn), Sydney, Paris, Kat, and Rio. They each have their own distinct personalities, and equally contribute to the team. I am sure in further books we’ll examine more than just Sarah/Brooklyn, but the others as well as they help Mother and team protect the world. As much fun as this book is, the problems lie again in some of its silliness. While children will overlook this, as an adult reader it was something I had to note. These are extremely talented kids, but the real possibility of a twelve year old hacking into the New York State Foster Care System? Unlikely. But, children will be able to suspend disbelief over this and enjoy the story…as I did as well.I may consider reading the next books in this saga in the future. It’s definitely a fun, quick read that I think adults and children alike will enjoy.

This book was on my rising 7th graders summer reading list, so I bought it. We have been reading it together over the summer, and he’s loving it. We’re almost done, so it’s a good thing I ordered the next book. While I have to suspend my belief a little more than he does, I’m enjoying it, as well. It’s fairly fast paced and well written, with a diverse cast characters that will appeal to a wide variety of readers. It’s also really challenging my range of accents, as I’m reading it aloud, and my son likes me to read each character with their “correct” accent (my apologies to Australians, as that’s the most difficult for me to do). The only thing that might be a problem for some readers is the regional slang peppered throughout the book.

I taught 7th grade summer school and each student was given several books to keep. This was one of the books chosen and several of my “kids” started reading it as soon as they got them. They all had positive things to say. While much of the book is highly unlikely, if it gets kids excited about reading, I’m for it.

My nine-year-old nephew recommended this. It's well-plotted, and you forget how implausible it is because the writer explains the why and how of each of the character's strengths, flaws, and motivations in such a way that you don't question it. You just plow through it like candy.

Fantastic! I loved the author's FRAMED series so I was expecting another great mystery, and I was not disappointed. The diverse cast of kids in this are fantastic. We get hints at the backgrounds of a few of them, which I enjoyed. I hope there will be more books in this series so we can get to know more about all of them. Even some of the adults get backstory, which really added to the richness of the characters and the story.

The mystery/spy pieces of this are excellent. Plenty of suspense. I thought this might be an older middle grade novel (10+). Some of the characters are older teens (15, 14) and there are some murders (off page) that are part of the case. I don't think any of that content will be an issue for younger middle grade readers, but it did make me wonder.

There are threads of the story left unresolved, so I hope that means there will be another book in this series. The characters are brilliant and spunky and loyal, and I would love to spend more time with them. I would hand this to middle grade mystery/spy story fans enthusiastically and without reservation.

Great writing, super characters, complex thriller (but not gory), and all solved by tweens and teens. Oh, a little help from quirky adults. Sara is rescued from being sent to juvie hall in Brooklyn by a weird British guy, who has three passports with three different names. Mmm. Yet, he gets her off, and whisks her to Scotland for help in the FARM. Think Spy School. Her name turns to Brooklyn, and her fellow spies all have city names (therefore the title of the book). Oh, yeah, her computer skills are off the charts, and the weird British guy has the "real" name of Mother.
Mr. Ponti is a fabulous writer. The book flows without a hitch. The kids, although in an outlandish situation, are suited for spy games much more than an ordinary life.
I'm a senior citizen who loves middle grade and YA novels. City Spies is one of the best I've ever read. Even when I was the "right" age. Way recommended!

This review is not about the story but about the book quality.

The font face and size is pretty good. The paper quality is very bad. It is so dark that my phone is activating dark mode ;). I wish this info is also shared on the product description. I understand that books are printed on cheap yellow recycled paper for Indian readers but this is the first time I got a book on dark paper which is perhaps the recycled cheap yellow paper.
