The gods are back, and they are tearing this world apart
Zeus, Dagon, Loki, Lugh and countless other deities have come back to this earth and rule over their individual districts with no goal other than satiating their own petty desires.
The sole remaining functional province, Hellenica, decides to act. They build the Academy and are about to recruit 16 young gods with the hopes of training them to police this world.
The Horsemen
Of these 16 young gods, four have strange powers that the Academy might not be able to control. Kayana Marx, Gunnar Redstone, Tommy Alderon and Saoirse Frost aren’t like normal gods, and their abilities stem from the Monotheistic times.
But if Hellenica has any hope of holding this world together, they will have to teach these four to exercise their powers to their fullest extent, even if it might bring everything to an apocalyptic end.

Review
IndieReader: CITY OF GODS is Science Fiction work that has intricately defined characters moving the action forward in a well developed plot. Verdict: IndieReader Approved!Honorable Mention - Best Science Fiction- 2014 - Green Book FestivalReaders' Favorite: What a cool book! City of Gods: Hellenica is one of the coolest takes on Mythology/Religion that I've read in a LONG time. I loved how much I grew to feel (for the teenage characters), and the plot kept me reading long after I should be doing other things ... like eating ... or driving ... - Verdict: 5 Stars!RisingShadow: Jonathan Maas has imagined a fascinating world in this book, because he writes about a world which has been divided into different fiefdoms that are being ruled by ancient gods...It was especially interesting for me to read about Saoirse and her gift of talking to the animals, because I've always been fascinated by these kinds of gifts in fantasy and science fiction books. Good and interesting entertainment! - Verdict: 4 Stars!GoodReads Review: Great book! It's a bit of a cross between X-Men & Harry Potter - but with mythological characters. The book was well paced, with enough twists and turns to keep it interesting ... I was sucked in and read the book in one sitting! - Verdict: 5 Stars!

The mythical gods of old have returned to the Earth and have split the continents and countries into their various territories. Now known as “The Conurbation”, these gods of old wage wars against each other and rule over their subjects... both human and mythical. One province alone seems to be immune and attempts to put a stop to this mounting threat. Hellenica, has constructed an “Academy” and has recruited 16 gods in the hopes of training them to police the rest of the Conurbation.
War, Pestilence, Death, and The White Knight, also known as the Horsemen, find themselves at the heart of a plot to destroy the Academy from within. With no help other than a few trusted allies, the youngsters must learn to harness their powers and outwit deities ages older than them the clear their name and save the Academy.
I really wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book but I was pleasantly surprised. The backstories created for each of the Horsemen were intriguing and fit each character perfectly. The Conurbation as a whole was ripe with all manner of human and deity and it was very apparent that Jon did his research with all manner of mythical gods and creatures. The Yokai were particularly intriguing. Their tenement sort of reminded me of a mythical Chinatown. I also loved the rivalry between Rowan and Gunnar and the budding relationship between an unlikely pair. While some may feel that this detracts from the story, I disagree because it just goes to show that while these 4 may become powerful beyond imagination in the future, they are immature kids at this point in the book.
On a personal note, I have now read all books currently available by Jonathan Maas and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. While I am looking forward to a second in this series I am also waiting to see what he imagines next. Some authors tend to pigeonhole themselves into a certain genre, but Jon seems to be a “Jack of all Trades” and very good at it too! I highly recommend any of his books!
When I read his sample start, I was immediately hooked. I stayed up long past my normal sleep time to just get a few more minutes in. Sadly, that turned into hours. I was one very tired worker the next day, but his book was well worth the read.
I have to say that this book reminded me very much in some ways the old Incarnation series by Piers Anthony. A world of gods, magic and science blended together from the mundane to the fantastic. And just like Piers Anthony, he makes a world so much like our own, yet twists it with enough magic and fantastic to make you go: Wow, I'd love to visit that place. Maybe not live there, but definitely visit for a very long time.
Maas doesn't delve into WHY the world is the way it is, I suspect that's another story in itself(wink), but makes it blend seamlessly enough that we accept it as the way it has always been. Though there are hints throughout the book and from characters that it wasn't always like that....
Maas hasn't paid me one dime. Look at my review history and you'll see I'm been reading a lot of these new writers, why? Because, sometimes it's good to embrace a new writer on the chance they can bring a bit of magic back into my world. Thank you Maas. You were very entertaining and I will definitely add your names to a short list of writers I'll check on.
Like I've told the other writers: You write. I will buy.
and P.s. You should definitely pay your editor and proofreader a better rate. They did an excellent job. I didn't even notice any grammatical issues. It was smooth....
Excelsior!!
The plot is so bland. A follows B follows C it is so linear. There are no surprises. There is no deep meaning. No truths except maybe everyone has flaws even gods. I felt also that absolutes like Death and War were trivialized. The main characters are supposed to be incarnations, supreme in their sphere of influence. They are not. Does the author mean to portray Death as just death, just a pale shadow and one of many? If so it turns what should be a main character into just another minor character.
The writing is unimaginative and dull. Explosive scenes of violence? Nope, action scene are explained to the reader like reading a text book or commenting on chess moves. Pawn to C4. Powers and abilities are left unexplained or they are not unique. The snake bites him. He survives the poison because he is pestilence. That makes sense but its hardly good reading.
Wants exciting stories of gods come again? I'd check out Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid chronicles.
Want a YA series instead? Try Rick Riordan. The books are 100 times better than the movies.
In my opinion any book by the following authors are worth paying for Brandon Sanderson, Ilona Andrews, Jim Butcher, Steven Gould, Lois McMaster Bujold and Micheal J. Sullivan.
Up and coming authors I like Marko Kloos, Will Wight, Anthony Ryan and Patrick Rothfuss.

A very interesting angle to look at all the old myths and religions in a different setting, a good and fluent narration style and a very good plot - as long as you forget whatever you learnt about Poseidon, Herakles, Osiris, Apocalypse etc etc - a really good story, and as it seems to be the first in a series, I am looking forward to reading the next ones to see how this is developping.
Definitely a recommendation from me.
