A Civil Life in an Uncivil Time is also very much a portrait of the time—the terrible cruelty and inhumanity of slavery and bigotry, the history and development of Alexandria, VA, and the unjust treatment of women. Among other injustices, Julia was always paid significantly less for her work than her male counterparts.
A lot of this story feels relevant today and gives insight into struggles that continue to this moment.
