This is a unique version of Beauty and the Beast. The first 2/3 of the film are nearly unwatchable as the male
character is rude, offensive, and despicable. He marries an Asian wife (a Buddhist nun as it turns out) expecting a subservient wife. Normally, I would write this movie off. But it had received some positive reviews so I stuck it out. Marie Matiko is a revelation.
When her husband has to face cancer and is given a few months to live, he beings his transformation with her help. Having had a similar experience with my spouse who passed away, the scene where she talks him through
death to help him reach a peaceful end is so like my own experience...and never been done so well on screen.
I cannot imagine a young person comprehending this film...it takes a life journey to understand how meaningful
the closing of the film was
