The story pulls in a few characters from the Black Dagger Brotherhood. The narrator did a nice job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene.

I'm normally a big fan of JR Ward. Love the BDB universe! But this story was all over the place. we don't see any sexy time scene until something like the 30-something chapters and there's barely any werewolf content either. Plus, there's a bit of a cliffhanger. I get that this is the start of a new series and we are going to have a lot of the story told in the coming books, but this book doesn't make me want to keep reading the rest. I'll probably just wait for Lassiter's book and skip the Wolven series.

I love JR Ward and have read all of the BDB books as well as the spin offs. I love werewolves so was thrilled to see that she was getting into the fanged and furry. However, this left me feeling like I was reading someone else's writing. The bones were there but it didn't have the pop that the BDB books have. The main characters felt a bit flat and the story sort of lagged. I also agree that this felt a bit like a cliffhanger. I did love seeing the crossover into the BDB world and I am planning to read the next one in hopes that this just needs some time to gel. I also felt that for a book that is the first in the wolven genre there was a noticeable lack of wolven until nearly the end.

Would I recommend you read it? If you're like me and prefer sticking with writers you know, trust, and love, then yes...but I would probably save this for that downtime we all have between when we've read everything our favorite authors have put out and when the new releases hit the stands.

Lydia works at a nonprofit and takes care of the wolves living in the area. Strange things are happening in the organisation, though. The boss rarely puts in an appearance, they are almost out of money, wolves are being poisoned, and now a hiker has been attacked. New hire, Daniel, is a drifter who never stays in one place for long. And yet, he’s oddly drawn to Lydia, which is a complication he doesn’t need.

I’m not sure what I expected from this book… but it wasn’t what I got. I love the Black Dagger Brotherhood (BDB), so I was looking forward to this new (related) series. Sadly, for me, it fell a bit flat.

This book was very slow to get going. I spent most of the book thinking “something is going to happen soon, right?” And yet, it didn’t. The book is well written, but it just doesn’t go anywhere. I wasn’t drawn into the plot and didn’t develop an affinity for any of the characters. Most of the time, I was busy trying to work out how the wolven fitted into anything (or when they’d make an appearance!) and what the BDB had to do with any of it.

Also, for a spin-off of the BDB series, this book was almost completely lacking in anything paranormal (this aspect shows up right at the end and feels almost like an afterthought). Well, apart from the occasional glimpses of Xhex. Which I enjoyed, but I’d probably have preferred they were in a new BDB book.

The book doesn’t end particularly well, either. It feels like the world’s longest ever part one of a serial rather than a full novel within a series. The connection between Daniel and Lydia never gets much of a chance to get going, and then we’re at the end of the book. I assume we’ll continue that story with the next book.

I didn’t hate this book, but I have to admit that I didn’t particularly enjoy it, either. I’ll give book two a chance when it comes out, but if that ends up being a serial rather than a series, I’ll probably give up as serials really aren’t my thing. I really wanted to love this book, but I just couldn’t.

First off, I am a huuuuge JR Ward fan. I’m in love with the BDB and was really excited to read this book, as I knew it related to the Brotherhood in some way. I don’t ‘not’ like this book, but I’m not in love with it in the same way as BDB either. My biggest comment is with the BDB books (and yes, I will keep likening this one to them as it is Wards biggest series), they move at a good pace and you are not kept wondering when something exciting will happen. Unfortunately I felt that’s what this book does. I also personally didn’t find too much compelling about the hero of the story, but that may just be personal taste. This book really feels like an extended prologue for the wolven series, which I didn’t expect. I thought it was going to be a book that stood on its own two feet, so to speak, but don’t feel that’s accurate at all. Also, if you take away the Brotherhood involvement, there’s big similarities to other shifter series (New Species for example) but then you often find that with PNR to be fair, and it’s never stopped me reading a book yet. I will buy and read the next one when it comes out - just hoping for a faster paced read next time. Also maybe reading all the BDB books coloured my judgement of this one as I had preconceived ideas of what it was going to be. Still recommend giving it a read if you like shifter series and/or Wards other books. Also worth a read if you are looking for little update tidbits on the Brothers and their Shellans.

I was really hoping this was going to be a great new series from J R ward, but sadly it felt like a cop out.i say this because she has characters from her Black Dagger Brotherhood series appear in it which,in my opinion,bare no relevance to this story other than to rope in her loyal army of BDB followers.furthermore, had people not read the other series these parts of the story would definitely be confusing as no clarity whatsoever is given to who these people are.the story itself is slow and the paranormal element for me so weak its hard to view it as one.the story appears more like a mystery book and even that element isn’t particularly strong.the characters were not particularly likeable and the whole thing had a rather prologue type quality to it.when something finally happened after pages of a whole lot of uninteresting, the book ends.I honestly can’t recommend this.it seems a very poor effort from Ward.

Its really hard to match the standard when the Barr is set so high with BDB.
I understand why other readers are having problems with the cliffhanger and having the same relationship with the characters as they do with BDB (if my hubby was like John Mathew, I would be very very happy) however, this series needs to be given the opportunity to plant its feet and sow the seeds. I for one am looking forward to finding out what is going on with Hex and how Lydia and her beaux Daniel fit into this. Way more than meets the eye.
