Radcliffe skillfully explores the attraction between two stubborn, independent and focused people. As Jack reevaluates his values and life, Lucy deals with her own baggage, a broken engagement that’s kept her from trusting and loving again. The dialogue between the two is on-point and the falling-in-love scenes, realistic.
Radcliffe also raises awareness of the issues surrounding foster children, with two little girls and one little boy that a reader will want to scoop up and take home.
She delves into her characters’ greatest need, their need of Christ. Lucy, the oldest of three siblings raised in foster homes, is afraid to give up control after raising her brother and sister and building up Big Heart Ranch with grit and determination. Jack’s coming into her life challenges her in every way, and knowing she has no control, she reaffirms her commitment to God. As for Jack, Big Heart Ranch, its beautiful owner and one small boy challenge him to review everything he thinks he is and stands for, bringing the successful lawyer to his knees.
This story is a good addition to Love Inspired’s contemporary line. The “ranch for kids” aspect is unique and offers a wealth of story ideas, while Lucy’s unmarried siblings offer potential for at least two sequels in the “Big Heart Ranch” series.
So I'm kind of in love with Tina Radcliffe's books. Her latest, Claiming Her Cowboy, the first of the Big Heart Ranch series is funny and downright adorable. Not only, there's substance. Know what I mean? A story is as good as it can be when it give us a plot that works, characters that makes an impact, along with touching our hearts, and teaches us something along the way.
"Cowboys wear hats. It keeps your head cool, keeps the sun off your face and keeps the dirt out of your eyes. A cowboy without a hat just ain't right." (185)
Claiming Her Cowboy promises on delivering an adorable 5-year old that will just melt your heart, and a message that goes in line with the mission statement of the Big Heart Ranch.
"First Corinthians thirteen. Faith, hope and love. Faith in God, hope for tomorrow, and unconditional love." (22)
Tina Radcliffe fit a story that seems to want to jump off the pages and spread the faith, hope and love it radiates for our characters. A place like Big Heart Ranch (the idea from the Big Oak Ranch, a Christian home located in Alabama for children needing a chance, as noted in the author's dedication) is so beautiful and humbling. To read about such love and devotion, it just touches those heartstrings like it's a musical instrument, itching to share the music within. In all, Claiming Her Cowboy isn't just romance as the title suggest, but a story that holds more than the mere 221 pages can keep up with. I look forward to the next books in this series for sure!
"Falling in love with a child has nothing to do with biology. It's a choice." (166)
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, and have not been compensated for this. This is my honest opinion.
Jackson is one determined and stubborn character! OY…he got my gander up more than once. Aside from the fact he’s tall, dark, and handsome, he also bowls right over Lucy without so much as howdy do! I loved seeing her buck his authority on more than one occasion, she’s one tough lady. For her part, she also must learn to loosen the reins a bit when it comes to her business and that God is the one in control. Seeing the character & spiritual growth in both Jackson and Lucy was fun to watch. They both have past issues that must be overcome to move on in life. Witty banter anyone? Yeah, these two got plenty of that kind of spark! There were lots of laugh-out-loud moments for me. Can’t neglect to mention Dub, oh he was cute with his lisp and little boy wisdom. How he dug deep in Jackson’s heart when he’s not a kid person, I do believe God has a sense of humor, don’t you? This has got it all; character depth, humor, lessons learned, plenty of faith, love and learning to give control to the One who has it all in His hands! Can’t wait for future books in the Big Heart Ranch series.
