Now onto this book. I knew it was a prequel to a series. Like I had seen it somewhere before I started reading, maybe in the blurb, but it slipped my mind while actually reading. So I'm going through the book thinking it's going to be a standalone and was all sad. Like, I'm falling into this story and these characters and there's so much I want to know and to happen but it's gonna end soon. Then I get to the end and I'm like Duh! Hello, it's not over! So freaking happy about that.
So a little about what actually happens in the book without giving too much away. Sydney has been in the Elemental Academy for as long as she can remember. It hasn't been an easy ride for her either, being she has no power. The day of the final testing, something goes horribly wrong and Sydney's life is changed forever. Waking up in the Lost Soul's Penitentiary is not what she expected and she's in for even more shock to find her former professor is now one of the wardens. Girl he is not happy at all. He's on a mission to make her pay for what she did and he's enlisted help. Syd has help herself from an unlikely source thankfully. Then things get all wonky in the prison and our girl Syd has to get things settled.
Sydney is a character that you just love. Yes, she's had a hard life but she is in no way an 'Oh poor me' kinda gal. She's a pick up the pieces and make it work girl. We have sexy mean guys with a little side of sweet. Don't worry, you'll love them by the end. And our girls best friend, well I just freaking love her. She's a hoot and a half and I think she compliments Syd perfectly.
The ending. Normally I'm all 'oh hell no' on endings like this but for this book, it totally works. Especially with the circumstances being what they are for Syd. Absolutely adored this book and I can't wait for the next book to come out.
Sydney is a succubus in the old way, and that in itself relegates her to the deepest dungeon to die along with other "spirit mages." The only thing that saves her is her professor's deep obsession; he must find her to regain his powers, even if he must break the rules to reach her. Unfortunately, his best friend then gets caught by her wiles, as well as a third warden (whose secret I immediately guessed...it did not harm my enjoyment.)
I had the pleasure of asking about the magic system and found that Dia really placed a lot of thought into it. You don't need a long-winded explanation of the system to enjoy it, but I discovered this is her light-hearted way of dealing with lockdown and 3 kids...hence, a reverse harem of hijinks. It takes a lot of courage, determination, and creativity to enjoy life right now, and it gave me added perspective on the story.
I don't normally like reverse harems; they are usually cardboard men with very little reasoning about how a threesome or more would work. The plot tends to suffer. But this was a fun plot, with plenty of eye-openers. I felt like I was getting a breath of fresh air after reading the news. Yes, with a succubus lead, this is no G-rated novel. Be warned. You will see some action, but it is sweet and not dark romance.
Very cool, very quirky and fun.
I love a story that is so thought out that all the details fall in to place. Sydney feels that she will always be a ’Null’, resigned to her fate until she finds out that she’s so much more. Through conflict and determination, her men put her through the ringer as each deals with what they believe is her deception. They find out soon that they were completely wrong and now need her help to defend their realm against a great evil while trying to make up for their misjudgment.
Along the way Sydney finds a new ‘friend’ in Al, who I absolutely love. She brings so much to this story as she helps Sydney learn more about her abilities ...and the art of dance. Al is quirky, funny and versed in human culture, which brings comedic, entertaining, and somewhat informative banter to their relationship.
This story is seriously one you MUST pick up.
