Editorial Reviews

The course of love doesn t always run true. Nagisa may have accepted Tomoya s proposal, but her father, Akio, withholds his permission until Tomoya can meet his terms... and even if that can be achieved, darker clouds are gathering that will shatter their dreams forever, as Nagisa s health begins declining. When what should be a happy moment, turns instead into tragedy, Tomoya s rage and frustration at being unable to do more than be by Nagisa s side leaves him unable to handle the responsibility left to him. But the story is not yet over, and there is still another act to follow. Happiness can still be attained, provided that Tomoya holds onto love, the most precious thing of all. The grand climax, plus several enchanting sidestories, await in the second collection of CLANNAD AFTER STORY.

Unfortunately, I cannot be too specific here; this second volume contains many plot events which I do not want to spoil for the viewer. Subtitles seemed fine this time.

To note, episodes 13-22 comprise the main story, while episode 23 is an episode occurring before the original series, 24 is an Another World episode for Kyou (similar to Tomoyo's in the first season), and 25 is a well-done recap that is actually occurs in-universe after the main story. The Kyou story is good, but really should have been at least 2-3 episodes. The prologue is amusing; it is not meant to be serious whatsoever, but is interesting.

As for the story itself... it entirely focuses on Tomoya and Nagisa, which makes the plot much more focused. As I think I mentioned in my review of the first DVD of After Story, what makes this show special in that it goes beyond the traditional high-school story. This DVD very much continues this trend.

This show is probably the most emotional that I have seen (although Air comes close.) I watched episode 22, concluding the main plot, for the third time (originally, I imported the Japanese release). I wouldn't have thought I would have been affected so much. So, while this makes for a tremendous show (and it's not manipulative in my opinion), it is fair warning that it is extremely evocative of emotion, especially if you've been watching since the beginning. I absolutely love this show, but I could not watch stuff like this all the time, and if I watched it entirely unaware of the plot in advance, I'm not sure I could handle it.

Great show. I doubt there will be anything quite like it.

When it comes to the Japanese software company Key, many fans appreciate their work as the video games tend to be dating simulators for the PC and many other video game consoles. Known for two visual novels "Kanon" and "Air" (both were adapted to anime series), the objects of the video games tend to be the gamer controlling the main male protagonist and with a lot of female friends, answering questions correctly in order to score. The first two video games were adult-based but in 2004, the company released "Clannad", a series that would not show nudity or fan service and a game for all ages.

"Clannad" received an anime adaptation in 2007 with a total of 23-episodes and was released on DVD earlier this year in the US from Sentai Filmworks. The second season known "Clannad ~After Story~" (which takes place after the first season of Clannad and then ten years later) is now being released in the US. The anime series is directed by Tatsuya Ishihara ("Air", "Kanon", "Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya") and a screenplay by Fumihiko Shimo ("Full Metal Panic!", "Air", "Burst Angel", "Gravion", "Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya"). The character design for the anime series is by Kazumi Ikeda ("Kanon") and is faithful to the original designs by Itaru Hinoue ("Air", "Kanon").

"Clannad" was an anime series that focused on high school students Tomoya Okazaki and a girl he meets his senior year named Nagisa Furukawa. Tomoya, who was a brash teenager who got into a lot of fights with his father and Nagisa, a frail teenager who has been out of school for periods of time due to an illness but somehow along the way, these two have found a special bond and love for one another.

Clannad After Story is the second and final season of the anime Clannad, itself based on the visual novel so popular in Japan. The first season of Clannad focused on the main characters in high school. The first few episodes of After Story are set in the final days of school, but the rest of the show focuses primarily on Tomoya and Nagisa after high school, although the other characters do have a part, just not as much as in the first season.

This DVD set comes with the second half of After Story; the first part of the show you will have to get seperately as Collection 1. Or you could just by the whole season in one, although when I purchased this the whole After Story collection was not out.

You will love this show no matter what kind of shows you usually watch. If you loved Kanon or Air (both done by the same studio that created Clannad) you will especially like it. Be prepared to cry, even more than the first season of Clannad made you.

As of now Amazon does have the full After Story Complete Collection available. However, Clannad (first season) is coming out in November on Blu-ray so it is likely that After Story will soon follow so you may want to wait if Blu-ray is that important to you. Then again, it is hard to wait for a show this good. I have DVDs of both seasons and I will buy both seasons in Blu-ray when they come out.

It's been a few years since I watched Clannad, and no other anime since then has been able to make me cry. The last few episodes of the series were heart-stealing and made everything else seem feeble compared to its storytelling.

Now, it might be a bit expensive, but get the Clannad and Clannad: After Story collections if you ever can. They'll be worth it. :)

Also, would recommend Key's other masterpiece, Angel Beats.
