Tempos are ideal, giving Mozart's luxurious, long-breathed yet fragile melodies plenty of time to unfold without sacrificing animation or expressive point. Great quintets

I was happy to get these 2 works together. I wanted them especially for the clarinet parts. The clarinet shines in both, but the styles of the 2 pieces from different centuries is clearly apparent: An interesting contrast and interesting to hear how different the clarinet sounds in each. I would recommend especially if you like Mozart and Brahms.

Brahms Clarinet Quintet is one of his most emotionally engaging works. The slow movement is almost Italian in its intensity-- certain moments even seem to anticipate "Tosca," so much so that I imagine Puccini must have studied the earlier work. This is music to study, to savor, and then-- and only then-- to finally let into your soul. The Emersons have clearly done much of the work for us. Thank you!

Never heard the Brahms that I can recall and when I heard it I immediately tried to identify it and then find a recording of it that I would own. Have listened three times now and really feel it's a wonderful thing to own, discover for first time or recall from the past. Didn't have any performance to compare it with but these guys perform an exquisite rendering of this musically complex piece. It's quite satisfying. As for the Mozart, well it soars as well. Great pairing and great listening.

The technical quality of the recording also is excellent. After hearing the CD, I purchased a copy for each member of my own quintet. Highest compliments are due to these players.

Actually I am not a fan of chamber music but these two clarinet quintets, especially the Brahms one, are really superb. I cant get enough of them and keep listening to them over and over to the extent that I wore out the CD and had to buy this new one.

Die beiden wahrscheinlich zwingendsten Beispiele des Genres Klarinettenquintett werden vom Emerson Streichquartett unter Mitwirkung von David Shifrin in überzeugender und stimmiger Weise dargeboten. Beide Werke zählen zu den immer wieder zitierten Perlen der Kammermusik, die bestechende Schönheit der Melodieführung beider Komponisten wird beim ersten Reinhören verständlich machen, warum dies so ist.
Wer die Interpretationen des Emerson String Quartet kennt und mag macht mit dem Kauf dieser CD nichts falsch, wird vielleicht sogar bezaubert sein vom samtigen und facettenreichen Klarinettengesang David Shifrins. Meiner subjektiven Ansicht nach stehen die allesamt meisterlichen Musiker in dieser Aufnahme allerdings der Version des von mir persönlich höchst-verehrten Alban Berg Quartets in Zusammenwirken mit der ebenfalls fantastischen Sabine Meyer in Ausdruck und letztem Quentchen Leidenschaft etwas nach. Die vorliegende Interpretation des Emerson Quartets wirkt mir eine Spur kontrollierter und glatter. Hier dürfte aber hinsichtlich der Kaufentscheidung letztlich der persönliche Geschmack den Ausschlag geben.

Beide Quintette werden hier gefällig-melodisch, mit Auslotung der emotionalen Komponenten, aber ohne Kanten und Schroffheiten, dargeboten. Das Mozart-Quintett hinterlässt durch diesen Ansatz den stärkeren, intensiveren Eindruck. Shifrins Klarinettenspiel ist stets weich und rund.

Der Klang der CD ist einnehmend warm und homogen, trotz dieser Abmischung dennoch gut durchhörbar. Die Instrumente sind nah aufgenommen, die sehr vollmundig klingende Klarinette wirkt mir hierdurch allerdings etwas zu groß.
