5.0 out of 5 stars Important Information May 5, 2010
The unit works great Here is some important info:

Clarion THD309 HD Radio Tuner works with this unit. I picked up one on ebay for 24.99 shipped. Don't waste your money on the THD300. It is more than 3x the price. The HD tuner uses your existing antenna. You don't need a separate antenna.

Autoconnect does not work out of the box. You must turn off autoconnect off and back on. Otherwise, you will need to manually sync your Iphone every time you turn on the car.

The wiring harness was the same as my previous Clarion unit (DB365USB). No new cables needed.

The display on this unit is much better than my previous Clarion. I can actually see what I'm doing.

Thanks to Vucko Zagi for the bluetooth and HD info.

3.0 out of 5 stars ipod bluetooth autoconnect - here's the deal December 24, 2010
By gluepet
I was about to rip this out of the dash and send it back - but it just got a new lease on life. As multiple reviews have stated - the unit does not automatically pair with iphones via bluetooth out of the box - but it can be done. the following worked for me. I am still not sold on the unit, as it does not recognize my iphone/ipod consistently through USB - but I will keep it a bit longer to see if I can make it work 100%:

FINDING THE "AUTO CONNECT" SETTING - First, you need to pair the device manually using the bluetooth settings on the ipod, next, have the audio source set to bluetooth on the clarion - and then hold the "D" button on the bottom right of the (Clarion) unit until it brings up some options ("clock"), etc - click the right arrow until you see the "Auto Connect" feature. Turn it to 'off' and back out of the menu - turn the unit power off and back on - go back to "auto Connect" and select 'on' - now it should sync up automatically.

Again - make sure the source is set to bluetooth, or the "auto-connect" option will not show up on the clarion...

As far as I can tell, the "menu" button on the head unit does not figure into the process at all - it's all about the "D" button.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great April 8, 2010
Works great, sounds great.
Bluetooth would not reconnect with my 1st gen iPhone so I went to the settings and set "automatically reconnect" to OFF, and then again to ON and it gets reconnected every time since then.
It sees my 4th gen ipod as mass storage and not as ipod?!? Works great with iPhone. If you want to access podcast choose Genre>Podcast>...
I purchased HD radio THD309 for $26 and it works with this unit.

Overall great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing bang for the buck March 25, 2010
i just purchased and installed (myself) a clarion cz500 in my '96 honda accord ex. installation was straightforward, as all required pieces were provided.

the unit sounds great, it snyced up with my first generation iphone in seconds, and the bluetooth works great. i found it pretty easy to program, but i'm something of a geek... still, it was far easier tweaking e.q. settings on this than my previous alpine.

i am amazed at how much technology we can get for so little, and wonder how manufacturers can make money at these prices.

i will do more testing on an upcoming road trip, and revisit this review if necessary.

AFTER ROAD TEST: i took an extended road trip, and was even more pleased with this unit. i was concerned at first because i couldn't directly access podcasts on my iphone, but quickly discovered how to create 'on-the-go' playlists. the unit sounds great, is easy to use, and is still highly recommended. there are some minor user interface quibbles, but so what?

Verified Purchase
I bought this based on all the good reviews here, and I am terribly disappointed that I shelled out over $100 for this. It is so bad that I am putting it up on Craigslist and buying a bluetooth FM modulator to use with my old stereo.

Problems (in order from most to least severe):
1.The quality of the bluetooth audio streaming is very very poor. It sounds passable for quiet acoustic songs, but when you have any highs or portions of the music with lots of instruments and varied sounds the audio falls apart with scratchy high-pitched distortion even with mp3 source material encoded at 256k and above. Using the line-in is easily twice as clear if not more. If you are used to having an audio device directly connected, the bluetooth will grate on your ears. Since this is the primary reason I bought the thing, this is totally unacceptable to me. Also, I tested several decent smartphones (Palm Pre, Samsung Epic 4g, HTC Hero) and all had bad sound quality and the scratchy sounds.

2.This unit seems to have overall bad sound quality. Bass notes are all that it can really push effectively. Highs sound clipped even at moderately high volumes, and the max volume is not as high as you would hope. CD's sound OK, but again are not as good as even cheaper units from other brands.

3.FM reception is not great. I got this unit after owning my last stereo (JVC KD-HDR1) for about 3 years which had great reception, and the tuner on this makes even local stations sound like they are coming from a hundred miles away.

4.The USB playback is useless for large storage media. I have a 32gb microsd card which is supposedly within the range this thing can handle, but it just stays on "reading" eternally.
