Product Description
Mark L. Lester's follow-up film to his Class of 1984 is a rancidly violent peek at a near-future high school world of terror - The Jetsons meet The Terminator. In Lester's world, total anarchy rules (at least in Seattle). Classrooms are sinkholes of violence, and around the kill-zone high schools "Free Fire Zones" are set up that look like re-creations of Dachau. Rival youth gangs roam these areas with enough artillery for a second Vietnam War. The gangs' insane violence is exacerbated by a drug called Edge. When the Department of Educational Defense needs to supply new teachers, they look to a secret government agency headed by Dr. Bob Forrest (Stacy Keach) who sends new teaching recruits (Pam Grier, John P. Ryan, Joshua Miller) to the beleaguered high school. These novice teachers are not your ordinary teaching-college graduates, however. They are "tactical education units" - cyborgs reprogrammed to teach readin' and writin' and 'rithmetic. If the students don't learn their daily ass

This is a great addition to our taste and quality for the price paid.
P.S. I remember watching this movie back in 90s. It is old but well done for a true geek.

DVD has pretty decent picture, UNCUT (bloody injury detail and mild gore, cyborg gore, green blood)
features include trailer and filmographies.
1989, 92 minutes, Region 2 UK.
The acting is a bit hit and miss, but there's some pretty well known faces in the cast. Malcolm McDowell plays the Principal who soon starts to regret hiring the new teachers, he's not in it for that long and his scenes were shot in just two days. Stacey Keach is Dr. Forrest, he plays the typical mad doctor. He's obviously having fun camping it up with his bleached blonde mullet and weird contact lenses. Blaxploitation star Pam Grier doesn't get quite enough to do as one of the robotic teachers, as most of the best scenes are left to the other two teachers. I love the performances of Patrick Kilpatrick and John P. Ryan as the other teachers, they really make the film as entertaining as it is. Kilpatrick showed up years later in a similar role in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Ryan should be well known for his brilliant performance in Runaway Train and the It's Alive series. Bradley Gregg is entertaining as Culp, he was also in Stand By Me and A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Traci Lind is very likeable as Culp's love interest and the Principal's daughter, she was previously in Fright Night Part 2. Culp's younger brother is played by Joshua John Miller who previously played the vampire child Homer in Near Dark, Gregg, Lind and Miller all appear to have retired from acting having not been in anything for many years. It's some of the actors in very small roles that give very dodgy performances, but it's fun.
It's well directed by Mark L. Lester, who's directed films like Firestarter, Commando, Armed And Dangerous and Showdown In Little Tokyo. Class Of 1999 was filmed in 1990 and was a loose sci-fi sequel to his 1982 cult classic, Class Of 1984. He never allows for a dull moment, it's never more than a few minutes before something else entertaining happens. Some of the dialogue is laugh out loud funny, but the actors play it straight, that's where humour lies. Like most films from the '80s and early '90s, every character has a wisecrack to end a sentence. The film had a reasonable $5.2 million budget, so in the last twenty minutes when there's a lot of effects, some work well but the budget limitations does slightly hinder some of the more elaborate effects. The soundtrack is fantastic as well, Nine Inch Nails and Midge Ure providing the standout tracks, Ure's Come The Day has become one of my favourite songs and plays over the end credits.
The picture quality on the dvd is pretty good, much better than I expected actually. This is just the film and nothing else, no extras at all, not even subtitles, just the option to play or scene selection. A special edition would be great, but for the price and picture quality, it's fine. Like another reviewer has mentioned, the film basically just takes Class Of 1984, The Terminator and Escape From New York and mixes it all together, the end result is a cheesy, action, sci-fi, horror, comedy classic that's not quite as good as the films it borrows from, but it's twice as entertaining.
I'd heard that Class Of 1999 is meant to be bad, in that there are references to The Terminator, which had been filmed six years before this one, and to all intents and purposes does appear to parallel the aforementioned Terminator. Having said that, I'd never seen Class Of 1999 before, though I had heard of it, I thought I'd give it a try, and I thought it was good, and rather funny in places.
