Being a guitar player myself for almost 40 years, Jimi Hendrix was a tremendous influence on my approach to the instrument, and Electric Ladyland was his masterpiece. This video was made in 1997, at a time, thankfully, when many of the principal characters around the story were still alive: Bandmates Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, Buddy Miles, for example, and manager Chas Chandler, all since passed, among others. As a musician, my favorite segments include engineer Eddie Kramer, who details so many aspects of the recording itself, all of which reveal Jimi's relentless creativity and the personal artistic stamp that he put on all of his musical influences and experiences. I give this 4 stars, not 5 stars, for two reasons: One is that. of course, Jimi wasn't around to tell his part of the story, and the disc doesn't include much in the way of interview footage (or even audio interviews) from the man himself. His absence is keenly felt as you watch. Second reason for 4 stars is that there is no bonus footage: The Classic Albums DVD of Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" includes 10 bonus tracks (roughly 35 minutes; in net, the Elton disc has about 25 more minutes of content than this one). These bonus tracks include excellent technical and personal details about "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", and I was hoping from something similar -- or perhaps even more! -- on the Jimi DVD. That said, bottom line: Strongly recommended.

If you're familiar with this series, you're aware of the in-depth look that's taken at the production of the album in question. So this is a similar look at Electric Ladyland. As a Hendrix fan, I tend to watch it once or twice a year and get something out of it. There are the by now standard interviews with Eddie Kramer and Chas Chandler, nothing too new there; but also some contributions from some of the lesser known contributors which are enlightening. And one of the great things about this series is that they sit at the board and isolate tracks for specific performances, which is really cool. Recommended for the Hendrix fan!

Watching this DVD brings the Hendrix fan closer to the soul that produced this beautiful work of art. The interviews and recollections show how Jimi's personality imprinted on everyone he worked with. They all still miss him terribly. This DVD provides insight into the process Hendrix evolved to in writing and recording his work. After watching this DVD I hear the album in a more informed light. Hendrix was a brilliant shooting star. I also noticed how much Prince copies Jimi's style. Somehow I missed that before this DVD.

Well, most ardent fans would already own it by now, but if not then you need it. This may well be regarded as Jimi's Classic Album, probably for the guest musician credentials alone, but all the albums he recorded for Track Records could also be included. Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland were, for many fans, Jimi's finest, and this superb documentary gives you the nuts and bolts, the sadness and the tears and thankfully, Chas Chandler's and Noel Redding's input, as they have since passed on. For their time, those 3 albums were absolute classics for their immense imagination and musicianship, so this DVD chronicling Electric Ladyland will perhaps give some small insight into the making of the other 2.

I buy all I can on Jimi his death was a tragedy not just for himself but for world music. HE WAS THE GREATEST and he had to go to England to be discovered. In 4 years he did so much. He died from choking on vomit which can happen to anyone not from a Heroin overdose. That was poor Janis Joplin of the same era. Like Monroe no-one there for her. Jimi is the best guitarist ever and the first time I saw him live on a DVD in a white outfit my hair stood on end. HE HAD IT IN SPADES.

IF I'd have got the later-released version, then I'd have got the 'extended' DVD of this. I had an idea that there was more to this, having seen the same version that we have on here (and recorded it, so I watched it a few or more times) and so I should have looked into it before purchasing. No matter though, because it's a brilliant documentary on one of the greatest albums ever (in my opinion of course) and it was lovely to see again as I've been a fan of Jimi's since the 80s.

I bought this one on the strength of the reviews above, especially the one from Amazon. Sure, it is interesting, gives good background to various tracks. Mostly interviews and rehashed old material, image not everywhere matching the music! But is this all they could come up with? To count 60 minutes you have to count intro and outro. I would indeed like to hear separate tracks from the original tapes. We get some, talked through, but it is very little. Why not make 'm avalaible with a menu and let us choose? The medium has possibilities, but the makers of this dvd did not care for them.
