Product Description
After toiling for years as an underground cult favorite with a rabidly devoted fan base, Irish rock band U2 finally broke through to mainstream success on the strength of their 1987 opus THE JOSHUA TREE. Released in March of that year, THE JOSHUA TREE became U2's first number-one album and won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The record's crossover appeal stems from its emotional exploration of universal topics such as love ("With or Without You"), death ("One Tree Hill"), and spiritual longing ("I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") without sacrificing any of the trademark social consciousness of the band's earlier albums ("Bullet the Blue Sky," "Mothers of the Disappeared"). This episode of the CLASSIC ALBUMS series details the making of U2's chart-topping album through interviews with band members, archival film footage, and live performances. I wish they would have spent some time on "One Tree Hill," "Trip through your Wires," "Redhill Mining Town," and "In God's Country." Those songs are pretty much completely neglected.
The footage with the Edge playing along to the raw tracks is pretty fun to watch, as is the personal dynamic between Bono and Daniel Lanois as they talk about the album over the mixing board.
Overall, very fun for a U2 fan and worth the purchase. Also has good replay value. I have enjoyed watching this multiple times because watching it with a first time viewer prompts conversation and excitement and makes repeat watching as fun as the first time.
The analysis goes track by track (although, as some have noted, there are some tracks missing), and it's done predominantly by Daniel Lanois, with input from Pop-era band members.
U2 fans and music aficionados alike will be pleasantly surprised at how insightful this seemingly boring documentary can be. I wished they made a follow up on some of their latter albums.
As for people looking for live footage or music videos for U2's The Joshua Tree, I recommend looking into the feature film Rattle & Hum and the Best of 1980-1990 compilation.
The producers sat down recently (probably while making the new U2 album) with U2, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Flood and discussed in detail all that went into making this album. Bono and Lanois even play back the master tapes to show instumentations and vocals that weren't included in the final mix. The Edge also breaks down the master for "Where the Streets Have No Name" and discusses how the song evolved, and shows all of the different guitar parts included in the final mix. I found the whole DVD fascinating.
I only wish that it had lasted longer (60 minutes). My hope is that maybe some of the magic that went into the production of "The Joshua Tree" will find it's way onto the new album...
The personalities of Eno, Lanois, Edge, Larry, Bono, and Adam are on full display, as well. An enjoyable hour that will help you appreciate "The Joshua Tree" -- and other albums from other artists -- in an entirely different way.
But the overall review is not comprehensive, focusing on three songs and neglecting in-depth discussion of the rest. While the band features prominently in the beginning of the movie, towards the end it appears as if they drifted off, and the album is not sufficiently dissected to allow insight into the thought processes behind the music. That of course may be intentional, or it may be that there wasn't much thought behind the music, but the overall effect of the film's short length and awkward ending is to remind us of the need to balance the creativity of the band with the discipline of a good producer.
