I ran across Classical Archives about fifteen years ago when it offered free MIDI versions of classical works along with some recordings of Russian concerts. It evolved into a market for classical MP3's with a subscription streaming service. I bought a subscription when they were first made available and I have continued with it on an annual basis ever since. For several years now it has offered the most extensive collection of serious music I know of anywhere on the net. If I go to it hunting on it for obscure (and not so obscure) musical references, and I am never disappointed. I also subscribe to another streaming service, pristineclassical.com, which restores early classical recordings, and between the two the bulk of all recorded classical music is available. This app is a great way to access this massive library of classical recordings, and the sound quality is good. However to do so you really need a subscription. If you pay by the year as I do, the tab is $79.90. Given that you get unlimited streaming access to a vast collection of serious music, much of which is unavailable for streaming anywhere else, I think that is quite reasonable.

This is a great source for those who want to hear a specific work, or to make a playlist to listen to several times. There are some great playlists that have been put together by other listeners than can be accessed. It works great on an Android phone, as long as an internet connection is available, although occasionally the app stops working. There are some things I don't like: first only 20 individual pieces can be included in the playlist and each movement counts as a separate piece. Thus the playlists are not very long (about an hour or so) and one must often stop activities to make another playlist during the day. Pandora is in some ways a better source, although there is little control over what is played. Second only the 100 most famous composers are included in the available music. I would like to see lesser known composers to allow me to explore little heard music.

Classical Archives is very good for planned listening to classical music, where one knows exactly what one wants to hear and for how long. It is worth the money for that feature. On the other hand, Pandora is a much better deal when one does not have an agenda, but merely wants to listen to a particular musical genre or composer.

I subscribe to the Classical Archives site, and this app is great for when I'm not at my computer to listen to music there. I now use the app on my tablet at the four venues where I teach a classical music appreciation class. It is great to be able to bring up the site and quickly find the music I want to play for the members of my classes. I also use it at my work instead of lugging CD's back and forth to play on my CD player there. It works flawlessly, and I really do love it.

The app is advertised as free. But what you actually get is free clips of music and not the whole. You are also encourage to sign up and you will get the whole music.....wait! you will get the whole music at &7.99 a month or approximately &80 a year. Needless to say I have now deleted this app.

Over the years I have been registered with the Classical Archives site and on occasion have downloaded paid for rare music tracks which were difficult to buy elsewhere. The site has also always offered streaming samples but this app gives convenient access to a selection of recordings on an economical monthly subscription basis.
It is far easier to find less common classical music items on this app than via competitors such as Spotify or Sony Music Unlimited or even Amazon. Just pick a composer from the list in the app, you are offered a selection of works and often a choice of albums. However the app does not access all music on the main site.
It is a little tricky to navigate while recordings are playing, the instructions could be better. If you have more than one item queued for playback, a button top left of the playback screen shows the number in the queue. Tap on this button to see and manage the queue.
To buy downloads you would have to access the main site but once you have the album title you can check availability from other vendors by searching the album title. In some cases the CD is unobtainable and buying a download is your only option if you prefer to own a copy.
I have not so far managed to get the playlist option to work but this might because I am in the free trial period.
In my opinion the playback screen is superior to Amazon Cloud player and other stream services.

I love it, I can create my own playlists or just informally browse and listen to any pieces I desire. The only way to improve it is to make the subscription less costly but it is still a great value at the present price!!

It has some of the most obscure music as well as classical favorites. IT IS TRULY AN ARCHIVE OF GREAT AND NOT SO GREAT MUSIC.

1.0 out of 5 stars The so called "free app" is deceptive. It isn't free at all!

Not free. If you want full tracks you have to pay $7.99 per month. Else all you get is 60 seconds of any track. Rubbish!
No thanks, I'll stick to Amazon Prime music, which at least is free although the choice is not so good.
