This is primarily a memory work program, designed to equip parents who need a framework for the often forgotton task of memorizing facts. The book contains all memory facts for a three-year program (repeated twice from K4-6th grades) which can be memorized by an entire family, together. Leigh Bortins, (The Core: Teaching Your Child the Foundations of Classical Education)is known for encouraging the one-room schoolhouse method of teaching which is so practical for home school families. "Foundations" is aptly named, providing a groundwork for all subjects while children so easily retain factual information.
Included along with memory work in three cycles, of History, Timeline, Science, English Grammar, Latin, Math and Geography, are guides for weekly science experiments/dissection, Fine Arts class, and public speaking direction. This particular guide discribes the weekly meetings which have helped to fuel the rapid growth of this supportive organization into a powerful homeschool network.
Granted, we've had our ups and downs with Classical Conversations, Inc. Because of the lightening-fast growth of what was originally a small, organic group, into a large, country-wide business, there have been moments when I have been discouraged by poor communication on behalf of the organization or it's lack of professionalism.(This is probably what caused another reviewer to be disappointed by poor customer service.) However, with the 3rd edition of the Foundations Curriculum now being used in our home for a year, I remain incredibly thankful for such an excellent guide for our modern, yet classical, homeschool.
