This is a childish mix of Frankenstein and Jewish myths about Golem. Young actors were disappointing and the story bland. Watching how the main character treated his poor aunt was a pain. He was clearly mentally ill but not in a way that would be interesting to see in the movie.
Unfortunately, the quality of BBC production is getting worth and worth. Even the camerawork is no longer stylish like it used to be. :(

It was a nice little psychological horror story. It was set in lovely Ireland and the people are known for telling tall tales beautifully.
Was it the novel he was writing or was it all real? You decide.
And the great Imelda Stanton can play anything from Shakespeare to Crazy Mary.
I had a good laugh when Z-Cars showed up. I do miss that series, even Roger Daltrey guest starred.
So, I gave it a 4 because of the acting. Too stiff. It needed an easy Irish flow but was too jerky and stunted. I think Mould was the only real character in it besides crazy Mary.
But sit back and have a slightly scary ride on a rainy afternoon with some buttered popcorn and your favorite cat.

I almost didn’t watch it, because of the mixed reviews. It’s certainly not the horror genre that calls for blood and guts being spewed, but a psychological venue instead, which is more my taste. Kept my attention all the way through. Thought the cast was great. Good acting all around. Cinematography was foreboding. Gollum was first rate.

This is a film adaptation of a book by David Almond. It boasts a great cast and is very well-acted. The film is set in the 1960s in Tyneside, Ireland. It is a coming of age film about good versus evil that resonates with psychological horror. Irish Catholicism and faith are underlying themes, mixed in with a bit of folklore. It may leave one wondering just what is fact and what is fantasy. I found the film to be compelling in the telling.
The film seems ordinary enough at first, with a group of teens trying to avoid trouble with the local bully and doing things every day teens do. Then, one of the locals, a woman with mental health issues, discovers that her sister’s teenage son is coming to live with her. From the moment he arrives, handsome, gifted, and decidedly evil, things will never be the same for those whose lives he touches.

Nice movie. It has a good-feeling, homespun, old-fashioned flare. The plot is original, the acting is great, and the movie is entertaining from start to finish. It’s not over the top or complex. It’s easy to understand. I wish there was a sequel.

The beauty of folklore and superstitions has a need of innocence in order to keep our ancient tales of wisdom alive.
Most will not begin it comprehend this because in the past 2K years any and everything about our human origins has been altered by modernization and mechanics.
Sadly, we've failed ourselves and aren't soon to recover.
Those who find this delightful tale worthy of praise aren't entirely lost. Hold tight. Embrace that which brings the very clay of our makings into goodness, hope, and oh, yeah, let's not forget love.

If you can actually get over feeling sorry for Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter)......., this movie is well worth watching. Had to leave it, come back, finishing it with a sense of disturbing sorriness for the clay.
