*** Update ***
And I spoke too soon. Plastic is shredding off of the piece of the base that spins, it makes an awful noise and the base tries to spin while in operation. This all began while making a typical smoothie. I should have bit the bullet and bought the new VitaMix model at Costco for $374 (it also has a 7 year warranty). I guess I will try to have it replaced, but I would rather not have it now to be honest. Trying to save $174 on something I intend to use for years was not the best decision. I left it as 2 stars because there is the possibility I got the bad unit, I don't know. I was happy initially so I can't give it 1 star for breaking.
*** 2nd Update ***
Cleanblend's service could not have been better. Initially I wanted a refund and I was going to buy a different blender, but they were so quick with responses and accommodating that I decided to stick with it. I have my new blender now, they did not make me ship the defective one back and I received a refund. Could not ask for more, not to mention that all took place in a short period of time. I went back to my original 5 star rating because the product itself I am very happy with. I am going to assume that I happened to receive one defective unit, they went above and beyond taking care of it so I will base my rating on the working product. It has a very potent electrically powered motor with what I would imagine is a fair number of moving parts and stress bearing parts. Fails are inevitable. Hopefully I get years of use out of my blender now.
My Vitamix, which was at least 14 years old, recently finally started making really weird grinding noises and emitting a smokey smell when being used. So I did my research and purchased the Cleanblend, which I have been using for a little over a week for daily protein shakes (ice, protein powder and milk). The overall unit is definitely lighter than the vitamix (I'll guess around 20-25% lighter) which makes it a bit easier to carry around and place back in cabinets if you are reaching overhead. I've posted some pictures comparing the two units, before the VM went out in the trash.
The mixing container (which square, compared to VM rounded) is also made of slightly lighter material. I can squeeze the blender container with my hand and it will flex more than the VM container (which will barely move). I think the CB container is still very durable though and would certainly survive drops to the floor. One interesting thing I've noted about CB container is that it seems to dry out quicker than the VM. Same routine as always, I make my shake in the morning before going to work and wash it out, placing it upright on the kitchen counter to dry. For the VM, when I would get home I would always have a tiny bit of water to dump out into the sink, where the CB is totally dry. It seems like water drops just don't stick to the CB container as much. Weird.
Other construction elements seem to be similar. Look at my pictures to see the units comparison shots for the blending blades and metal mounts on the bottom of the mixing containers. Metal to metal contacts should make for durable units.
The controls are simple, and I like rotary power knob. Make sure you always have it turned all the way back down to low! When you flip the power switch to on, the motor just goes! Pressing down the pulse switch makes it go faster, but I have found that normal mode is quite adequate. The CM completely pulverizes the ice in my shakes, which I make the exact same way as I did with the VM. The CB, however, leaves not a single chunk of ice at all, where the VM would invariable leave 1-2 chunks big enough for me to crunch on. And the CB shake is definitely creamier due to the complete pulverization of ice that is happening. If I want the more "slurpee" consistency I would get with the VM, I need to add more ice, which makes the shake bigger in volume but produces the same result. And, the CB is quieter than the VM during this whole process.
No complaints at all with the CB so far. The 5-year guarantee gives me peace of mind. If this unit gives up the ghost in year 6 I will feel like I got my money's worth.
