To counter some of the negative comments/reviews by a couple of the reviewers... 1- This book isn't the same as the wheel of time but of course it's writer has borrowed some tidbits but Robert Jordan also borrowed plenty of ideas himself. Greg also seems to add some LDS Mormon/Book of mormon ideas into this book as well. Judge Zeesrom anybody? And 2,000 individuals praying to God for deliverance? (Sounds similar to the 2,000 stripling warriors) also the Con' Kumen are very like Gadiantons... 2- The women characters are not all weak and only there for romance... Someone looking to claim that is uninformed or just must really feel picked on. There are several very strong female characters in this book.
Read- If you love fantasy and interesting new worlds with likeable characters. This might not make the top of my fantasy list but it definately is up there. The book is much easier to follow then the Wheel of time as Parks doesn't take 1 page to describe the setting for one individual conversation.
This second book accomplishes both well, with awesome conflict, climax and enough resolution to make you glad you read the book, while still leaving enough threads open to make you anxious to read the next book.
I know Greg, and resisted my son's urging to read them, merely because I thought, "How good can they be? It's just my kid's high school teacher"
WOW was I wrong! They are a fantastic hidden gem which should be on the reading list of everyone who loves fantasy! Greg is an excellent writer who makes a rich and diverse world that you fall in love with.
With the strong political backdrop of this book, less time was spent on battles and action sequences. Although I found myself wanting more action to break up the political machinations, I felt that the battles that did transpire were grander with higher risks. These encounters eventually culminate into a grand fight at the end that left me yearning for the next book. All-in-all, the first book was a good start to a good series and this one took it up one notch.
