This cable is perfect if you have older Firewire 400 hard drives or camcorders that you want to hook up to an iMac that was built from 2010-2012. In this narrow window of time, the iMac was offered with USB 2.0 (x4) and Firewire 800 ports. The new iMac for 2012, did away with Firewire entirely, so if you have old Firewire equipment that you want to connect to a new iMac, you will need a different cable than the Clear IEEE 1394 Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 cable.

This is a fairly heavy gauge cable that works as advertised. I was able to back up my old hard drives onto newer hard drives with no issues.

I would recommend this cable.

My iMac had a video card stop working and it was going to cost too much to repair so I got a new iMac and decided to sell the old one. The only issue was dealing with the removal off the hard drive so my personal items couldn't be recovered and I didn't want to have to deal with removing the front glass and all that jazz so I google'd how to view my hard drive data on my new iMac and figured this cable would be the cheapest and fastest solution. I was able to hook up this cable to my old and new iMac and view my old hard drive through my current working screen so I could do a 7 time wipe to the old hard drive and I can rest assured that my personal data will not be floating out there somewhere that I didn't know. This cable and google made it super easy to connect the two iMacs. I would have given it another star if it came with some sort of paperwork or explanation about how to use it for certain circumstances or at least reference to a website.

I needed this for a very specific use- transferring from an old white Macbook to a new 2014 Retina Macbook Pro (needed an additional FW800 to Thunderbolt adapter as well). Worked great and much faster than an older USB connection. I suppose I can use it to daisy chain some external FW hard drives to my iMac as well.

Just hooked up this new silver cable today between my new iMac and my old Nikon ED 4000 scanner that operated on Firewire 400. (I also needed a Thunderbolt (from the iMac) to Firewire 800 adaptor to connect to this silver cable to make my iMac to Nikon scanner compatible.. Everything now works perfectly! Being a photographer, I still make many scans from OLD 35mm slides for digital format. I also like the length of this cable which allows me to have some distance between my scanner and my iMac if its necessary.

What can say... I was in need of a firewire 400 to firewire 800 cable and this worked perfectly. I appreciated that I was a 6 foot cable at a great price. Some of the others on Amazon were cheaper, but only 3 feet long.

I'd give it 0 star if it were possible. This cable quit working after a month. Worthless. Spend the extra cash and go to your local microcenter and buy the 20 version they sell there. The connections on this cable are loose and crappy.

I had an older Seagate external drive and wanted firewire 400 speeds, instead of USB 1.
I connected to my Macbook (with firewire 800 port) with no issues and have used it several times since.
No problems and the cable feels sturdy.
