In The Clear
The growing, if belated, popularity of Ivy is a happy event. Over the course of a half-dozen releases, the band has married slightly trippy atmospherics to immaculate popcraft and the melancholy vocals of Paris-born Dominique Durand. In the Clear, their fifth album, finds the guitars occasionally louder (they roil and distort on the kiss-off "Clear My Head") but the mood essentially the same. Its a romantic, cautiously hopeful one, exemplified by the discs closing "Feel So Free." Special and secretive--"Tess Dont Tell" repeatedly insists "Its just for you, its not for anybody else"--In the Clear thrives on trademark Ivy contradictions and, now and then, an unexpected noise in the corners of the sound. --Rickey Wright

If you are familiar with Stereolab, then I would compare the vocalists from both groups as similar. The music is different, but both vocalists come from a French pop background and you can hear it in their music. Ivy is a combination of electronica, folksie acoustic guitar and flourishes of light rock guitar with Dominique Durand's beautiful vocals soaring over the light, flowing music that results in very catchy, interesting mature pop/rock. It's all songs about love and relationships, so don't expect any deep themes or unusual subject matter. There's no politics or attitude, just enjoyable, semi-melancholy, breezy pop music.
The whole album is great, so I wouldn't point out highlights. They have enjoyed some measure of success, from what I've read about them, so I hope that they will be around long enough for the general music public to take notice and make them the stars that they deserve to be. I don't give 5 stars to albums often and I like to be as objective as possible about reviews, so don't let my enthusiasm for this fool you into thinking that I'm just another reviewer that gets excited easily and hands out stars like candy. If you like pop music and aren't looking for something heavy, or with a punk or hip-hop attitude, you will love this. Highly recommended along with anything else by this group.
I admit it, I discovered Ivy late. And I've only gotten 2 of their CDs, "In the Clear" and "Guestroom". I found Guestroom to be OK, but not all that outstanding. But In the Clear is a classic. Do yourself a favor. Buy this music.
