Almost 20 years after 'Clear & Present Danger' appeared in theaters, James Horner's complete soundtrack for this fine movie finally was released. There is a substantial amount of new material not released on the original CD. Most stirring, of course, is the 'Main Title' - a beautifully woven string melody featuring violins, violas & cellos as the American flag appears on the screen, fluttering in the wind on a U.S. Coast Guard cutter as it intercepts a yacht owned by the President's friend. Other previously missing cues include 'Jack Briefs FBI/President', during Ryan's first meeting with the President in the White House, the bellicose 'Ambush' in which an American diplomat's truck is targeted by Colombian cartel thugs & shot up - which Ryan narrowly escapes - and 'Moira's Fatal Phone Call', in which an FBI staffer is murdered by cartel henchman Felix Cortez, on a sinister mission to Washington, D.C. Many of the cues written for the sequence in which Jack meets Ernesto Escobedo and helps an operative (Willem Dafoe) rescue his men after they are cut off by the sinister Cutter's shutdown of their satellite uplink.

Many of the cues are quite short; some are only a minute long. 'Ambush', at 9:53, is the longest. Once again, with this score Horner proves he's a capable master of the soundtrack, in a class with John Williams, the late Jerry Goldsmith, and Lalo Schifrin.

This CD is a big hit; get it while it's still somewhat reasonably priced!

James Horner's score to the 1994 political thriller "Clear and Present Danger" (based on a Tom Clancy novel) is a masterpiece of action and suspense and contains one of the most stirring patriotic themes I have ever heard. It is found in the opening and closing tracks (an extra version of the latter appears toward the end of the second album) and it is referenced elsewhere. Although similar to Jerry Goldsmith's main theme for "Air Force One" from 1997 (obviously borrowed by Goldsmith from Horner), Horner's theme is far superior and much more memorable. Another great theme is found in "Operation Reciprocity".

The previous release contained only about half the score; this 2-CD release contains the complete score plus three tracks from the original album. The entire score has been remastered and sounds more vivid than it has ever sounded before. Horner is a master at building suspense. Just listen to nearly-10-minute "Ambush" track to see what I mean. Although there is some use of electronic sounds that I don't care for (I'm more of a classical/symphonic purist), the vast majority of the score is symphonic in style and makes for a very enjoyable listening experience. (Note especially the exciting "Woodroom Finale" track that was omitted from the previous release.) Horner borrows heavily from great 20th century classical composers such as Copland and Khachaturian. The two versions of "Looking for Clues" found on this set evidence an almost direct quote from the slow movement of Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony. The claim that Horner just recycled themes from his other scores here is not very compelling because there is much original material, and what is borrowed from earlier scores is some of the best music Horner ever wrote!
