This book is great, with all the right bits for me: funny, relatively slow burn over months, sweetness and caring, humor between the characters and in events, maybe 15% mystery, some details on backstory, extensive details on work context, and the rest focused on the character building and relationship development. So, a balance between "other" story and the relationship development. I also seem to be a sucker for feeling worried for one sweet character, and then soon running into the other good guy...there maybe trouble ahead, but I am already so relieved! Very strong character building, with switches between MCs POV from chapter to chapter. The forced slowdown on the relationship near the end really contributed to my strong buy-in to the HEA.
A Highly Recommend: have reread multiple times, a go-to book for a comfort romance read, on my Best MM shelf.
Things I consider in an mm romance
Smexy scale 1-5: 3
These guys have only a few (2?) explicit scenes: they are hot and appropriate to story. Some of my favorite moments are when Patrick catches Whiskey's attention, and Whiskey is swamped with 'feelings'. Yum.
"Whiskey watched as his muscles flexed, and the line from his shoulders to his back to his ass to his thighs to his calf to his bare, long feet made that scattered kid into one perfect, fluid piece."
Humor scale 1-5: 5
Smartass people doing what they do. "Whiskey’s mouth lifted in appreciation. The kid was a smart-ass. Of all the wide variety of asses—feminine and soft, male and hard, open and begging, reluctant and tight, Whiskey’s most favorite, very bestest type of ass was this type right here. The snark-at-the-world smart-ass."
Likable MCs scale 1-5:5
As noted. Not a broad cast of characters here, though Freya is great.
Angst scale 1-5: 2
Patrick is really vulnerable and hurting at the beginning, and basically splatters it all over the pages. I winced and worried, and then we met Whiskey...and then I waited with baited breath...."Patrick’s smile was nuclear, but Whiskey looked at it too long anyway and maybe burnt out all of the non-Patrick receptors in his brains, or at least that was how he described it to people for the rest of his life."
Do not read this book if you are afraid of frogs, yoga, environmental science or houseboats.
Warning: A roofie drug is used; violence in "worst break up scene ever."
There are twists & turns in the book...but you just have to have faith that the author will get you "there" and oh does she ever?
One of my favorite quotes:
“I don’t want you to stay with me thinking I’m with you because I’m fragile, Whiskey. I want you to know I’m staying with you because I love you and I don’t want anybody else. I want you to know I’m strong—and I want you to be happy. You go on this last thing, this last trip, and when you come back, I’ll make you a home and you’ll take care of me, and we’ll be happy ever after, okay?”
This story /audiobook is easily a 5 star story -- you will fall in love with Whiskey & Patrick, right along with watching them fall in love!
In a new setting with a simplistic life on a houseboat -- It's a wonderful journey for Patrick. Even better being taken along for the ride. I wouldn't mind seeing this group of characters continue in a follow up book. See where life takes them on that houseboat. - Dan's Wife
Others have written in-depth reviews, so I won't go there, but how the sheer writing talent and storytelling ability of Amy Lane has escaped me for so long is just another grain of sand in the Sahara of the Unexplainable. This was such a fun read; I'm with the reviewer who reads it over again (I do that also with Caught Running by Abigail Roux) and will probably do the same with this one. In my book she's up there with Josh Lanyon, A. Roux, Madeleine Urban, Harper Fox, Jordan Castillo Price, Marie Sexton, maybe even Ben Monopoli and a few others I can't think of right now. Bravo, Amy, Bravo!
