Question: I do not know my cycle length or my cycle length varies. How do I know when to start testing?

If you don’t know your usual cycle length, you are advised to wait for at least one menstrual cycle, and note the length of this cycle, before using Clearblue Digital Ovulation Test. Once you have determined your cycle length you can use the instructions to work out when to start testing.

If your cycle length varies by more than 3 days, then choose the shortest cycle you have had over the last 6 months to work out when to start testing. It is possible you may need to start a new pack and use the new Test Holder and Test Sticks to detect your LH surge.

Alternatively, if you wish to start testing without knowing your cycle length, we recommend you start testing on day 10. (However, in this case it is possible you may miss your LH surge because you have started testing too late or you may need to start a new pack to continue testing.)

The Clearblue Digital Ovulation Test quickly and accurately detects the surge of luteinizing hormone in your urine which normally occurs 24-36 hours before ovulation (when you release an egg). It works, but a total ripoff

Presumably, it works as I received several negatives followed by a positive result. However, I feel like this product is a total ripoff as it's basically just the normal (way cheaper) test strips inside a plastic holder. After you take the test, you eject the test strip holder from the reader and you can see only one line if the device gave you a negative result (a circle with no smiley face in it). If the device gave you a positive result (smiley face in a circle), the ejected test stick shows two lines. As you get closer to ovulation, you'll still get a negative result from the device, but you'll start to see the ejected test strips with a faint second line (meaning you're close but not there yet). The instructions specifically say don't pay attention to these lines as they "don't mean anything", but it's pretty obvious the test device is just reading the strips for you. They basically threw 20 test strips inside little plastic holders and added an electronic reader and charge 8 times the price (the strips cost about $0.22 each, and this kit is about $1.80 each), so I'm my opinion this kit is a ripoff unless you just really have a hard time looking at two lines.

Other things I didn't like:

Personally, I'd rather see the strip with the line being non-existent, then gradually showing up until it's clearly as dark as the control line. It made me way more anxious just getting a negative result over and over and then all of a sudden it was positive and everything was fine.

I also learned that using a "midstream" test is way harder than just peeing into a cup and then dipping a test strip into it for a few seconds. It's very hard to keep the tester clean from splashes, and just overall more difficult to manage.

And a very important thing to note is the directions in this product specifically state to not pee for 4 hours prior to testing and "many women find it convenient to take the test first thing in the morning". It will not take much Googling to find that it's best to take ovulation tests between 12pm - 8pm if you're on a normal sleep schedule, as your body doesn't really produce the hormone it's testing for in the morning (unlike pregnancy tests). So I was really irritated by that oversight as I could have missed my positive result had I exclusively tested in the morning (the second month I was tracking I took the test the morning I expected to ovulate and got a negative and then took it again in the evening and got a positive).

So overall, while this product did do the job (but only because I stopped following the directions and stopped testing in the morning), I feel like it's so not worth the extra money.

We are actually ready to start trying for real this month so I ordered a box of 50 ovulation tests PLUS 20 pregnancy tests for literally half the price of this kit, and so far they work very well. (Also, way less plastic went into making the test strip products than this kit, so extra bonus there).

We have been trying to conceive for 2 years
Was to the point where we couldn’t even watch tv if we saw a baby or pregnant woman

I took a chance on this test because of the reviews
FIRST TIME USING IT AND WE ARE PREGNANT!!
I started testing on cycle day 12, by day 16 I got a smiley face. On day 17 I got another.

I would suggest testing twice a day at the same times once you get your first smiley face. That really helped us know the exact 36 hours of the LH surge.
We also to decided to go over board with making love those days (why not lol), including the two days after to be sure! Lol
On day 18 the test went back to a circle but my temperature was spiking 1.2 higher then normal so we figured i was ovulating

I took a pregnancy test 10 days later to see faint lines!!!! I tested everyday after that and by cycle day 29 I took 3 tests with all solid pregnant lines!
Went to the doctor the next day and they confirmed pregnancy!

I HIGHLY recommend this product!!
