This book is a must read for not only every aspiring athlete, but for anyone who loves a true story of loss and failure, human perseverance, and ultimately achievement and success. A story of how a small child that was adopted into a family of multiracial adopted kids in a small northwestern town, overcame all obstacles and struggles in his life, to ultimately become a three time World Champion and the 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist in the Decathlon. You've got to read this raw story of Dan O'Brien's life and how Dan beat all odds along the way. Dan came back from one of the most publicized failures in athletic history, to being eventually hailed as, " The World's Greatest Athlete!".
A truly inspiring book in many ways !
Sometimes encouraging, sometimes disappointing, but always interesting, Dan's story isn't too different from a lot of other elite athletes. It is a reminder that our sports stars shouldn't be expected to be role models AND that the gifts you were born with pretty much determine how high you could fly. He makes an excellent testament to the patience and skill of his coaches with this book and to the chaotic love his family offered - but otherwise, this is about what you would expect from an Olympic champion's biography.
