1.)Sometimes I have no act right.
2.) The elements of the book
3.) I knew because of reason number 2 the review would "bleed."
I think each reader will take what they want from a read. It could be the humor, the characters, dialogue,or the sex scenes. We're different. We decide which elements we liked the most.I always start a read on a honest note. No opinions, nothing. I started this one. I could relate to Kassie. She got a raw deal. I know from experience, in that moment you have a lapse in judgement, the good sense you were given goes out the window and all bets are off. Sometimes..we become broken.
What I didn't like was when Kassie didn't take responsibility. Her focus was on the situation. I understood she was inside her grief. It was alright for her to mourn. She had lost so much but she wasn't moving forward. The time will always be split into two parts when tragic stuff happens. What happened before and what happened after. Her time before seemed more important than her present.

There was a time when I would’ve blurted out my ex’s name. But after a year of walking inside myself, I knew the truth. I said the words aloud. “I hurt me.” …
“I allowed myself to stay in a harmful relationship. Maybe he caused the pain in the beginning and knocked me down with his words, but I never got up from the ground. I stayed down in the dirt and let him kick me some more.”
“Because I was afraid.”
This made the book worth what I would rate it.
These lines were all it took if nothing else I read in this book connected for me.
I liked the introduction of "Lou" and the girls. The chemistry between the two characters came out of a hopeful broken place. It turned into the real passion that ignites those sparks needed to set your damn heart on fire. While I understood Lou's honesty and thought it was good that his inner thoughts matched his actions. He knew what it was and why he did it. He had too much going and it would've come to an end regardless. When it did. Well, the fall out wasn't what he thought and the lessons learned were more for him and Kassie than the girls. Children are very resilient with the right support. The humor wasn't lost on me. I laughed. The sex scenes I could relate with haha. Realistic experiences. My favorite scenes - When he came to the house. Uh oh Kassie was "ass out." Yes the dialogue between the characters and the scene was phenomenal. My favorite "sex" type scenes was that one and when Lou was in the car. Oh yes, car wash time sir! Hey call her and let her know haha. He set that boundary quick. I was in tears.

I lost my damn mind in the comfort of my own page. Explicit language all over the place.
I felt like Ellis had it messed up. I wanted to page step and take Kassie to the side. I understand how caring and supportive you are girl . Good parent and all that but listen.. Hey, let me be honest about it. He has one more time ( by that I mean he didn't have another damn time.) But if he would've called her another damn name. Whew! I fell into a silent rage. I said to my self let me finish this 16 minutes I have left. This one( Ellis) here ( more explicit language).I was satisfied with Lou's decision. Hell, justified. Done.
I was actually told I shouldn't read this on a book date . The person encouraged me to read it on my own and I understand why. This book had a profound emotional affect on me. Which isn't easy for a writer to accomplish. I will be banned from writing reviews, eventually. But not on this one! So I'll drop my buckets of stars here and kick them over. Extremely well done.
P.S I want my "demon" lover -the suffering omg! If you don't know what I'm talking about. You will!
This book was so much more than a simple romance book. This book could go into several combined genres. The main storyline was is a contemporary romance but it also had elements in the genres of inspirational and a bit of paranormal. What amazed me is that she combine all three elements into one grand story and did it so effortlessly that I doubt even Ms. Wright knew that she has done. This book was like reading three books in one but it was one grand story. This story deals with the family after affects of drug use, mental abuse, and of how to pick up the pieces of your life with the smoke clears. Which is the perfect title of this book. I laughed, and I cried but most of all I was fascinated and inspired.
The story is about a romance writer name Kassandra (Kassie Jones) who discovered that her husband had cheated on her numerous times. Cassie because so deeply hurt that her actions led to divorce and being separated from her family for a year. Now she picking up the pieces of her shattered life by relocating to Sarasota, FL. with a huge chip on her shoulders about love and men. Thus she is experiencing major writer's block.
The hero of the story, a firefighter name Lt. Lorenzo (Lou) Hornsby (that name was so appropriate by the way) is a true hero in many ways. In addition to being a firefighter, he is a single parent caring for his two twin girls. Dealing with the after affects of his ex wife Cicely, first kidnapping her daughters so that he was unable to contact them for 2 years and then suddenly her dropping off their twin daughter on his doorstep due to her habitual drug use that Cicely could not overcome.
An incident involving Cassie son Richard led both Lou and Cassie to meet and the sparks fly. Cassie is doing everything in her power to rebuff Lou romantic advances. The main essence of this story is how do this couple find love when both are picking up pieces of their lives and both have baggage to overcome. Cassie and her issues involve men and Lou and his issues with anger, raising twin girls, a stressful job, and his determine focus to win Cassie's love.
One of my favorite part of the book dealt with Kassie overcoming her writing block and writing about these paranormal characters about a girl name Luna, a witch with magical powers, who is deeply lonely and is looking for her one true soul mate who happens to be a demon. She can't deny her attraction for him but can't get over the fact that he is a demon. The characters that Kassie write were similar to herself and Lou and their problems. Reading this story within the main story was just as fascinating and it help you to get to know Cassie more and also moved the plot of the overall story.
To me this story was very powerful and I love how Cassie made it a challenge for Lou to get to know and how Lou had to earn her trust. I love the reality of this couple falling in love even though they have issues of their own. It took great strength for both to overcome, adapt and to accept their issues and flaws and to learn how they needed it other to help them become stronger.
There is a point in this story that will make you cry and I won't give that away just to say I was deeply inspired by what happen. I hope that I gave enough information in this review to inspire those interested in this book to give it a read. You won't be disappointed. You don't have to be a fan of the author to love this book but if you are a fan then reading this book is a bonus.
