Karen pryor is a behavior biologist and author whose popular books range over a wide variety of subjects, from mothers and infants to dolphin social systems. As a founder and curator of Sea Life Park in Hawaii she pioneered many of the techniques that are now standard worldwide in the training of marine mammals. She is the author of the leading textbook on positive reinforcement in humans and animals, Don't Shoot the Dog! The New Art of Teaching and Training. How to train your dog to self-stack and gait at the best pace

This book stands by itself -- nowhere else will one find how to train a dog to self-stack without ever putting a hand on him. These are techniques that are known by the great handlers and used in the ring with the great dogs. One doesn't need to use a clicker -- one can "cluck" as if directing a horse to go faster. The book shows you, step by step, how to teach your dog to self-stack with attention, how to gait at the best speed with reach and drive and how to teach a dog to put its ears up, its tail up and its tail down as needed.

The reviewer that stated that no one uses clickers in the ring obviously does not understand clicker training. The clicker (or the click sound) is only used to train the dog; once the dog understands the command, praise can be substituted. How much better than waving bait around or using a squeaky toy to try to get your dog's ears up and his attention!

As a breeder of puppies destined for the Show ring, I highly recommend this book to my 'newbie' puppy buyers who intend to Show. For those who want to Show their own dogs, it gives them a good insight into how to train and present their dog more professionally and to be competitive. Even if their Breeder or a Handler is going to Show their dog, it is valuable for them to train and prepare their dog for what to do in the ring.

The book is focused more on how to use clicker training to capture "Show ring" behaviors, not as a basic tutorial on the concept of clicker training. So if a puppy person is new to clicker training concepts, I recommend a basic book and practicing with tricks and other basic behaviors first. Every dog should know how to Free Stack to be competitive, and how to work without bait, as some Judges do not like over baiting in the ring. TRAINING these behaviors in a way your dog can understand what you want it to do, not simply trying to lure your dog into position with food in the ring, is ideal.

For those commentors who say "you cannot use a clicker in the ring" they are not understanding that the clicker is used only to 'train' a behavior - as a cue to the dog when he is doing something right. Once trained, you put the behavior on a command (i.e. "sit") and the clicker is no longer used.
