About the Author

Danny Thomas grew up in East Tennessee. After graduating from Clinton High School and playing football for legendary Bear Bryant at Alabama, he worked as a teacher/administrator for twenty years in Durham, North Carolina. The family—his wife, Cynthia, two daughters, and a son, accompanied him to new jobs in Salisbury and Sanford. Upon retirement in 2006, he began consulting work which allows him time for writing. Now, the family divides their time between home in Winston-Salem and summers on an island retreat in Northern Ontario.

Danny Thomas did an excellent job in writing about Tennessee. The book covers a wide variety of events and
it is a book I would recommend. It makes for good reading. I almost could identify several of the characters in the
book as the book pops alive from the first page to the last.

"Clinch River Pearls" takes place in Clinton Tennessee during a tumultuous period in American history when schools were no longer racially segregated and twelve brave black students were the first to test the new law. This was a time when bigotry and fear raged across the Anderson County landscape, when teachers, farmers, law enforcers and even white students would be tested.
This book centers around events and people in Clinton in this period of turbulence and violence, and at the core lies Linda Lockwood the indomitable mother of six children who operates the family's farm while her husband manages Magnet Mills in Clinton. Interconnected with Linda's life are those of her workers Jed Powell, an industrious, multi-skilled labourer trying to earn enough money to buy his own place, Buckley a drunkard and petty thief hindered by his distaste for hard work, and Fletch a hardworking black man who has to deal with the narrow-mindedness of racial hatred.
In the novel each has a story to tell, each an experience to share like Jed Powell whose prosperity was invested in six pearls stolen by a thief prowling around the church, only to discover his greatest treasure lies in the woman he loves. There's Buckley, the petty thief who seeks solace for his troubled life not from the woman who loves him but from a bottle of Crow, and Fletch who fears the hatred and vengeance of the White Citizen's Council especially after his dog is poisoned with anti-freeze. Linda Lockwood, strong-willed and resourceful works alongside her labourers even taking on a pet project, trying to reform the incorrigible Buckley.

Format: Paperback
Realistic story that highlights aspects of old American society and depicts it with a gritty southern accent. The author does a great job of not sugar-coating society and the history of the South. The situations faced by our protagonists make you realize that no matter the era, location, race or economical condition, Americans all face similar problems. The more I read and submerged myself in the story, the more I found myself emotionally attached to the characters. I shared their sensations as they struggled through everyday difficulties and was overwhelmed with the joys they experienced. I dare compare this book with any American Classic, and truly believe that with time it could become a reference in American Literature.
