EDITOR'S NOTE: According to a Warner Home Video technician involved in the production of The Stanley Kubrick Collection, Kubrick authorized all aspects of the Collection, from the use of Digital Component Video (or "D-1") masters originally approved in 1989, to the use of minimalist screen menus, chapter stops, and (in the case of 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Shining on DVD) supplementary materials. Full-screen presentation of The Shining and Full Metal Jacket was also approved by Kubrick, who recomposed his original framing, reportedly believing that those films looked best on video in the full-screen format. (In fact, the original theatrical aspect ratio of The Shining was 1.66:1, meaning that a relatively small portion of the image is lost.) Kubrick also chose mono over stereo, believing that inconsistencies in theatrical sound systems resulted in loss of control over theatrical presentation. In every respect, the Warner spokesman said, the films in the Collection remain as Kubrick approved them. Any future attempt to remaster or alter them would have to be approved by an appointee of the Kubrick estate.

Now, I know that the movie is not technically complete because it's missing the last chapter of the book but, having that unbeknownst, I think it is important to look at the movie for what it is, as one whole.
The movie is well recorded and the blu ray disc quality is acceptable by HD standards. The film starts immediately as soon as the disc is read and bypasses the main menu. You can access the main menu for extras, subtitle options, and/or commentaries via your blu ray player's controller. I did not like this feature that much but, considering the movie is terrific, I've overlooked that.
I won't spoil the movie but I will say this: This film is not for children, and it contains nudity and violence.
I think the movie does not celebrate ultra-violence nor the old in-out in-out but rather one's ability to choose for oneself.
Thank you for reading this and have a great day.
I only remembered the horrid violence inflicted by the main character after the first time I watched this movie. Upon viewing my purchase, the violence is still horrid. Yet amazingly it is not as gory as I find some prime time television shows of today. The "horrorshow" in this movie is the manipulation of the people by politicians. To stay in power they will deal with, absolve, elevate and use slime. The politcians are the prominent thugs. The movie worked over theme to the point I felt like a pummeled boxer. But then, some may need a message so delivered. But why "A Clockwork Orange"?
I give this production a four of five stars rating. The disc with the extras are well produced. I couldn't beat the price when I obtained it. The movie is a classic for its theme and for Malcom McDowell's chilling performance.
The transfer for a 40 year old movie is breathtaking. WOW is all I could think of. I remember watching this on a scratchy Beta tape for the first time in high school and the difference is night and day. It’s like watching not only a new movie but re living what Kubrick and his art director’s had in mind to begin with so long ago. This is what they meant! This is what they intended and we just settled for a washed out interpretation for so many years until now. Both visual and sound upgrades are a lifetime of improvement and the ability to use subtitles is just awesome, especially for this movie, with its Russianglish.
Another thing is the keep case it comes in. This isn’t just 2 blu rays and a booklet. It’s the booklet in the middle of the two blu rays and each disc is molded into opposite sides securely and allows you to look through the book without removing the discs. The case is solid cardboard, it will not bend or break without great force and what they call a digi book is just fantastic. Very cool. There’s special features on BOTH discs also. And for once, a special features isn’t just the commentary and trailer, there’s actual documentaries about the trials, making of and tribulations of making this film with a modern day update of solicited interviews from directors like the American Psycho director and American Beauty director.
This package update is worth every cent and in my opinion a great deal and a welcome addition to anyone’s collection that is a fan of this film.
Get this and pop it in, you will be glad you did and get ready to cringe again in a good way through the brutality of such a fine film.
